Oğuzhan Özyakup's Ottoman Odyssey
The Daily Star says we have sold the young midfielder to Besiktas for £570,000 plus 25% sell on fee.
McDowell42's Transfer Rumours thread mentions this first, but I feel the lad deserves his own thread.
Good luck!

750,000 in this market isn't much for a player we've had in our academy for ages.
Thought he was a promising prospect? Seems like a sudden abandonment, but I guess they have to pick and choose when they get to the 18-19 year old level...

I'm sure I read something about him - like a positive review/piece - on prada.com last season...maybe he wanted out as well? - who knows, thing is there are quite a few who just get let go/moved on for nothing, so perhaps he does have something...Good luck to him.

No disrespect quartz but why ?

Re: Oğuzhan Özyakup's Ottoman Odyssey
This seems a marked change in policy to me. Wenger would normally keep this kid hanging around in the reserves until his early twenties.
I wonder if this is the start of the clear out required to pay RvP

Besiktas is Turkish for Crystal Palace.

Because he was a player that I had heard good things about and I thought we might see him be a regular bench player by the end of this season if he had a good Carling Cup showing.augie wrote:QuartzGooner wrote:The Daily Star says we have sold the young midfielder to Besiktas for £570,000 plus 25% sell on fee.

No disrespect quartz but why ?The guy has made zero impact on our first team and is just another failure from our wonderful youth set up
I wish the guy well like I do with most of those guys that never make it with our club but am not sure why he is entitled to a thread of his own
Others had heard of him too, so I thought they might be interested to know he had been sold, in case they had not read the Rumours thread.
Re: Oğuzhan Özyakup's Ottoman Odyssey
I guess he wanted first team football but wasn't in Arsenals plans, with a 25% sell on clause there is a small chance we could make a couple of million if he succeeds in Turkey and another club wants him in a few seasons. Though 25% of his next fee could easily be less than his agent will make.

There are a few of our younger players (joel campbell and afobe for starters) who are beginning to worry about you putting the mockers on their career now as you clearly did with this guy's

Anyway on a serious level quartzy, I know you rated the guy and I wasnt being dismissive or anything but in recent years we have seen a hell of a lot of budding stars fall by the wayside and for me this guy is just another one of them

I think it is very much a feature of our youth policy that we have many promising players in the 16 - 20 age group who do not push on to first team level with us but end up in the Championship or less strong overseas leagues.
I was thinking about this earlier and I guess that whilst the small transfer fees we receive for these players would possibly only cover half of all scouting, training, billeting and travel expenses for the youth players, the system pays for itself in the sense that when a Wilshere is developed it potentially saves millions in transfer fees, and of course can bring in millions if we sell him on.
