Feel very sad for the lad, I was 27 when my dad died, god bless him, i was playing a good standard of football then but couldn't play for at least month after he passed away so good luck to the lad if he can play so soon afterwards but it will affect him for sure, even on the football pitch where I could always count on forgetting all but everything for 90 minutes, just not that.

Certainly feel for Defoe, not easy to deal with a loss like that at a young age and apparently his father had been ill for some time.

I met Defoe once, I was expecting him to be flash but he was a nice bloke, down to earth and genuinely enjoyed his football.

Defoe has rejoined the squad already. I've always loved Jermain, always seemed like a top lad and I've seen many interviews during the club season when he's stressed how important it is for him to represent England which is class when you look at others like Carrick and Richards who wont even agree to be on standby, and this just tops the lot, what an incredibly brave bloke. In an era where footballers are often seen as self centred pricks, here's a lad who could have been forgiven for missing the whole tournament rushing back to help his country despite some of the worst news that any of us will ever receive. Really hope he comes on against France and scores the winner, a player who actually stands up for England in their hour of need, his father would be proud and so will every other Englishman.

I saw the trips to Auschwitz and Schindlers factory On Telly last night - I was pretty impressed how it moved the players.

It's a reminder of how fortunate we including footballers are, and maybe for some players helps them focus on their job.

I've been to Auschwitz.
It is the only place you will visit that you don't need to take photos as you will never forget it.

I would recommend that everyone should go if you get the opportunity.
