Mikey although attacking players were needed i would have been happier getting defensive players this summer or at least playing a more defensive style of play. While we have to outscore teams we will NEVER win a trophy of merit

thats why MVila would be the perfect and most important signing.

He would protect the back 5 like a dm should be. we dont have any defensive cover in MF.

He would stop so many goals being let in and allow the attacking players to attack and not make cunty mistakes like they have been. i get he is only 1 man but it would help

I highly doubt he will be at Arsenal ever.

Agreed M'Villa is crucial to this. If we have a genuine defensive midfielder then you will see a very different defensive unit at Arsenal. A back 4 of Sagna-Kos -Mert/Verm - Gibbs with someone like him infront would surely be a lot better than last year. Add to Bould hopefully adding a new emphasis on the defence and we could make major strides.

The point is these signings point to some sort of progression.

its all a big if though mate. I dont think we will pay the asking price for Mvila, despite him begging us to get him!

M'vila is the key to us competeing. More so than anyone else. If we dont get him the back 4 will struggle again and so will the attacking players

This M'Villa speculation does sound positive, but I don't want to get carried away...Has Giroud actually signed yet ?

I'm glad that it appears to be practically unanimous that the biggest single signing that we could make this summer is that of a quality DM cos it is something that I have argued on here for a long long time.

Anyway back on topic (seeing as this thread is about giroud), I have openly admitted that I have seen fcuk all of the guy so am not in a position to judge the quality/potential of this signing but it appears that many of you have seen him play a fair bit and rate him highly as a result so let me ask this question........is he too good to be a back up player ? Let me make it clear that I do still believe that rvp will be off to pastures new this summer but if he doesnt leave then would giroud be a back up for him and if he is as good as advertised then would he accept being a squad player ?

There is no evidence we have signed this bloke. Flash you should have stuck to your guns and merged it with the drug induced transfer thread. If it is to stay here let's just keep it about Giroud please.

Why does he have to be back up though?

12m is a big fee for this club, that would be an expensive squad player.

Maybe Wenger is going to do a tinker with the formation, Adebayor and van Persie worked before, maybe he's gonna go back that way.

Agree with Mikey, next year could be promising.

Just to add to that, Wenger has always said that he will always play the formation that suits the squad and he's also said that we relied too much on one player scoring goals last year

Reading between the lines Giroud and Podolski are not coming to play second fiddle, they are coming to be big parts of the team.

This is what I am driving at though - £12m is a whole load of money if he is only a back up when we have other issues. What I will say though, with almost 100% certainty, is that wenger will not change his formation for giroud or anybody so we are stuck with 4-5-1 until at least 2014  :cussing: :cussing:

if that's true pel, then someone should tell RVP's family, what with his Dad saying RVP should show some loyalty to The Arsenal for supporting him in bad times, & his wife and mum also saying he should stay in the press.

to me, what makes the most sense for RVP and the club is a one year extension - RVP gets to see how we do next year, and the club doesn't have to shell out a fortune on a potential crock AND get a sell on fee next summer.

win win...

I read somewhere today that the fee was actually £9.8m
