As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Ya really think Usmanov would lie about something like this?
Ah I've been trying to find something like this. Cheers.
Yes I had seen the info on Wiki but we all know how reliable that site is!
That's fairly recent change - Do we know when this call was supposedly made?
It will all be revealed in the coming days I'm sure.
What we know for now is that Gazidis is fucked, so let's bask in his misery.
I'd love for some tit-for-tat response from the club.
We know that the Arsenal don't/won't operate in public and even if they did it would, despite their best intentions and polished PR, would be the usual spin.
What are they going to do - give him the money for his Executive Boxes back and bar him from the ground? I very much doubt it!! Mind you, I suppose Stan could ban Usmanov from shopping at any Asda stores.
In todays blog, arseblog bemoans the fact the the Gooner faithful are no being polarised and split into two totally opposite camps and it is a fair point - however where he falls down (again) is that he suggests that it is possible to want wenger to change without getting rid of the man and that it is possible to want the board to change without wanting them to be removed but in doing so he decides to totally ignore the glaring evidence that refutes his statements When has wenger or the board ever shown an admission that they were wrong much less an inclination to abandon and change their policies ? The simple reality is that if we want changes then we need a change in personnel to introduce these changes cos the guys in charge currently wont bring them in so my advice to those who want wenger kept on and are still anti usmanov is to get on board with the way things are being run now or otherwise support the call for changes at the top cos imo it is one or the other

that guy was on ireland's newstalk programme and i've rarely heard someone so perfectly attaching themselves on the fence.
We all discussed loads about this when USM was here, and I remain convinced that Wenger has more to spend if he wants to, but chooses not to spend of his own accord.
The board too, are happy for him not to spend, but do have cash to spare if needed in an emergency.
My key questions is if Wenger was given a load of money to spend by a new owner, would he spend more than he currently does?
My thinking is that Wenger does not spend at the moment because:
1.) He knows the club are trying to save up the full amount of repayments on the stadium before splashing cash.
2.) He agrees this is sensible, given the club's current financing model in a major economic recession, where our rivals are massively wealthier than us.
3.) He truly believes that FIFA Fair Play will help shift the balance towards us to some extent.
But, if a new owner came in with massive cash, then Wenger might not have to worry about these three issues.
For "evidence" I offer our higher spending pattern prior to 2005.
What I don't get is that it's not as if we've never personally benefited from spending money. We actually made fairly significant net outlays (by our standards) in the summers of 1997, 2001 and 2003 and look what happened in those seasons!

Or even...
4. He's like a shot-shy gunfighter who is scared to spend big money on players because his record hasn't been great whenever he has opened the purse-strings.

same as Terry Neil (3 FA cup finals in 3 years) and George - both polarised the crowd when the trophies dried up.
rightly or wrong;y, some will say that Arsene has been hung up by the purse strings, others that he bought into the 'buy em cheap, pile em high' experiment.
we'll never know - but i'd be interested to see what would happen if Usmanov put in 200 million and said "Arsene go spend son..."
1. Whose idea was it to "reward" bendter, denilson et al with bumper underved contracts ?
2. Whose idea is it to continue with a formation that isnt working and never has worked for us ?
3. Whose plan involves waiting until the 65th-70th minutes of games until making substitutions (inj permitting) ?
4. Whose idea is it to continually play players out of position ?
In recent seasons we have had absolutely glaring needs in two crucial positions in our team and wenger has ignored it.
The goalkeepers position and the Defensive Midfield positions are vital in any team but more so in ours given the total disregard we pay to defending as a team and we had money to spend so why jeopardise everything for the hoarding of money that is available ? Is he that arrogant that he believes that his coaching can overcome all weaknesses in the team ? That would be ironic given that his idea of tactics during a game is to flap his arms around like a demented fcuking budgie
Too many people willing to make excuses for wenger still imo - yes he hasnt had the endless bounties to spend that citeeh and chav managers have had but he has had more money to spend than most clubs in the league yet we are being outspent by most. This might come as a shock to some fans but spending the money we have available wont turn us into another leeds or portsmouth but would at least give us a better chance of competing for trophies like a club of our stature should be
1.) Think it was Wenger's idea to keep players on long contracts, in response to losing Flamini.
Personally I would go for two or three year deals with first options to renew after that, but of course can open us to older players buying themselves out of contracts.
2.) Formation has not worked too well with players available, may do with other players.
3.) Agree, is a poor tactical manager.
4.) Agree to an extent. Bendtner as right winger was ridiculous, though he made a better go of it than might have been thought.
We do need a better squad depth.
More cash should help that.
I remain very concerned over his continual failures to address weakness in key positions.
I practical terms am very ambivalent as to Wenger staying or going because I simply believe he will remain manager who ever takes over.

and all those 3 for the price of 4 up for grabs, a bit like Atrsenal players really!

Quartz i agree with these points and think that Wenker truly believes that what he is doing is for the greater good of the club in the long term. (which may have a grain of truth perhaps)
If he was given £200m he wouldn't change his MO of buying either young players he can develop and get the credit for, or buying players who have something to prove / injury to recover from as he likes players to feel that they owe him personally for their careers. I don't think he can manage a player already at the top level with some self opinion on how to play the game.
