This is the worrying factor for me too. I don't like buying players who can play multiple positions, but If we just added Vertonghen who seems a good CB and according to sources on here can play DM, it would have made for a good Summer for us Gooners. It's also quite interesting that these "Song to Barca" rumours just keep going(Maybe that's why GIC is looking to sign Sahin?)? Anyway, Vert could have covered for the loss of Song(please God) at DM and move to CB so that TV5 can move to LB(If/when Gibbs) is injured.
That 1 signing could have made a big improvement to our squad. Ohh well...I live in hope that we get Sahin instead of the scousers.

I would love us to sell Song. To me he is everything that is wrong with the current Arsenal. A good player with flashes of brilliance, but forgets what his basic job is and lacks character when the chips are down.

£15 Million..........I would bite Barca's hands off

Felling slightly optimistic. For the first time in a few years its possible we may have 11 on the pitch who giv a shit and will put in a shift. I can live without titles, but not without pride in the club and the players. Hope Arshavin,Chamakh and the rest of the deadwood can be flogged.

On another note, but probably not much to do with this threaad, but I can't be arsed to start a new one  , but if we keep RVP, I would be a bit more optimistic about the season but I would move us to a 442 instead of the crap 433 or 4231 whatever we play atm.

First choice:

RVP/Giroud
Gervinho/Podolski-Carzola/Arteta-Song/Sahin-Theo/Ox
Gibbs-Verm-Kos-Sagna
Sneezy

Replacements:
Bendtner/Park
Santos-Ramsey/Jack-Diaby
Santos-Per-Djourou  -Jenks
Flappy/Mannone

Jees...typing that last part was scary tbh

We need more

The general consensus in the press seems to be that Wenger will only go for Sahin if we can get rid of Song. It's a no brainer surely. Please just get it done Wenger!!!

Not sure there is much in this, but if the marketing team want more presence in Asia then who knows?

True AKBs are annoying and regularly appear deluded, but their opposite numbers (has anyone coined a name for them?) are just as bad. Like every other club on the planet, we haven't solved every perceived weakness in the team in one transfer window, but for once we're ahead of the curve and have done more than our rivals and some people still rack their brains about how to put a negative slant on things.

"AW is a liar!" Flash and playingmantis must be the only people on the planet who took AW's 'I've never heard of Cazorla' comment seriously. It was clearly said tongue in cheek, like when I tell the wife that I hadn't noticed that my 19 year-old, Penelope Cruz-lookalike student, to whom I give private lessons, is good-looking, "Is she?"

I would still like to see a DM and a back-up RB, but I no longer believe in Father Christmas and am quite happy with the signings we have made. Not only have we spent big, but we appear to have got good value (12 mil for Stephen Fletcher anyone?)

Have seen ki play a few games for Celtic last season and tbh he looked a good DM and is very tidy in possession. Of course the fact that he was playing in a poor spl should be factored in but I don't like the fact that in the English league every Asian signing is viewed as a marketing ploy - certainly for me Honda would have been a huge upgrade on diaby/rosicky/hleb in recent years. I hear manure fans in Ireland writing kagawa off as a shirt seller and for me thanks disrespectful to a guy who has shone in a Dortmund team that has won the last 2 German titles

don't need to rack our brains to put a negative slant on things. arsenal spend big? - let's come back to that at the end of the window - at which time we can look at the incomings and the outgoings. (inc the pile of shit we are looking to clear from the current wage bill.

also, how difficult is to see that gibbs is not yet up to playing left back and santos is a liability? Or that jenkinson looks championship level, and the overall questions about the defensive attitude of the team? That now we have a question over song.

Plus I think you have misrepresented Flash cos I thought he said that he'd rather Wenger had said nothing, not that he was unware of hat Wenger was doing.

Finally, wasn't it you who said don't get excited by Cazorla cos he is the spanish walcott? Hardly positive...i didn't look back to check, i just have it mind.

my ankle is killing me and this is good therapy when the drugs don't work.

fair point, but the most important signing that was need before the summer, a DM is still missing. sign a DM and no strikers (assuming that rvp had stayed and signed a new deal with no fuss) or sign what we have and no DM? think i would choose a DM.

i think the team would improve immensly with a quality beats of a dm, more so than with what has been added so far.

as for the liar thing, its not about cazorla, its the BS he spouts for the past 6 years.

Just a question or two for those wanting a new Defensive Midfielder.

1) Wasn't Arteta playing the deeper, more defensive role last season? I seem to remember him playing pretty well that's all

2) With a DM, what would be your ideal formation and starting line up? My worry here is that with a dedicated DM, rather than a more defensive ethos when out of possession, we may lose width from the team, which makes us very one dimensional - a problem we have had for a while now

I know the old complaint about conceeding 49 goals last season, but for me that had more to do with the fact that we didn't have a settled defensive unit (I think someone said we played 19 different back 4 combinations last season, which is a tad mental). With Sagna's second leg break and Gibbs/Santos not looking the part, my gut feeling is the defensive weakness is more with our full backs than a lack of DM, thoughts?
