My instructor was really switched on and told me that if I booked my test at the latest available slot (about 2.55 I think) then I was 95% sure that I would get the best route. The difference in pass rates between routes varied ridiculously from about 35% to 75% he reckoned.
I remember being so nervous that I got 4 minors on the road after the test road. Luckily the tester started talking and settled me down and I only got another 1 all test.

I passed mine 2 years ago, at the tender age of 28... passed it first time, although I did take lessons when I was 18 and failed 3 times in a row and gave up... I think the standard required to pass a test is much higher now than back in the day. Even comparing my test now with a decade ago, we now have independent driving and the hazard awareness test on the theory lesson.
