£150? have I missed something?

I just did a quick look on http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/ for fares on the Sunday morning of the Liverpool game and an adult off-peak open return is £74.20.

That's you benchmark. Check http://www.redspottedhanky.com/, http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/, etc. for possible cheaper fares.

Even if you got a weekend open return on saturday morning it would only cost you around £75. Get £15 upgrade to 1st class sorted.

Euston to Lime Street, changing at Birmingham New Street, London Midland services only = £28 return.

Admittedly it takes a lot longer, the only train that will get you there in time leaves Euston at 07.50...
