Re: Gone for a Song?
everyone knows PL & CL are the priority, because that is where the money is - and it's the CL that attracts the overseas top players
finishing 5th in the PL and Winning the FA Cup, won't help the club. Finanically it would be bad, and also wouldn't attract the players we need to stay in the top 4.
I agree i'd love to see Arsenal FC win the FA Cup or CC Cup, but it's not at the top of the clubs agenda,
we are not alone, look at last seasons CL - Man U and Man C both got knocked out early, and if taken seriously could of had a good chance of doing something in the Europa league, but neither clubs wanted to know.
sadly just the way football has gone

Re: Gone for a Song?
Can't understand the delight about Songs departure, ok he was not the finished item, had a penchant for the "Hollywood
Pass and his disregard for his defensive duties pissed me off no end but he had potential. This is the same player that people said was the worst player to have ever worn the shirt after his firs few games, he clawed his way back and nobody could deny he added to the team. Not as obvious a loss as van c**t but his transfer is just as big a symptom of a club in decline.

Wenger went his own direction. A direction that ultimately failed to the extent that almost all of the players involved have either left or are hanging around like a bad smell. To suggest the only alternative to "project Wenger" was a Leeds, Pompey, Rangers type implosion is just lazy and wildly speculative.

It's not "Just" lazy and speculative - It's also very, Very VERY Silly...in the extreme.

Just read this on a Barcelona blog...

It's nice to see they're just as baffled about signing Song as many of us

At the bottom off that article they running a poll asking fans should they have bought song - it goes without saying that I, as a dedicated Gooner, voted yes in that poll

My favourite bit...

"Dmytro Chygrynskiy, Alexander Hleb, Keirrison, Henrique, Zlatan Ibrahimovic; it would be a tough list to crack, but even before a ball is kicked, I would argue that Alex Song is pushing for a place in the top five worst FC Barcelona transfers of the past five years"

Re: Gone for a Song?
Haha makes me happy to know that their fans are aware they're throwing silly money at a player who is far worse than their current options in both CB, CM and DM.g88ner wrote:augie wrote:g88ner wrote:Just read this on a Barcelona blog...

If there's one thing we're good at it's selling: Clichy, Hleb, Toure and Song are 4 players who at the time they were sold weren't good enough for AFC, yet went on to sign for City/Barca. As a highly annoying American would say, "go figure".

Re: Gone for a Song?
I think Barcelona see Song as Keita's replacement.
An average all round midfielder who can be on the bench but bring physical presence when needed to a team that lacks it.
I think it is great business for us to sell him.
But we should really replace him with a good ball winner.

Re: Gone for a Song?
Exactly. We could get £40m for him and it wouldn't be great business if we didn't reinvest it, because money in the bank is going to win you 0 points every year. Looking at AFC's willingness to let him leave straight away, Sahin's failure to complete the touted move to Liverpool and the fact that Wenger actually singled him out in a press conference today, I imagine (and hope) that we will tie up this season-long loan deal for him early next week.QuartzGooner wrote:I think Barcelona see Song as Keita's replacement.

I think Song will do well for Barcelona if he is ever allowed to actually play (for the first team
).

Re: Gone for a Song?
I think the whole Song ideal provides the perfect litmus test to see what Arsenal really is all about.
My theory is this:
-We pocket the money from the Song deal, balancing our net spending from the OG/LP/SC deals = AFC is officially nothing more than a profit driven business
-We spend about 15m on one defensive midfielder of similar quality = we are committed to self-sustaining finances
-We spend more than 15m on two quality midfield signings of similar quality or promise = AFC is legitimately trying to compete for trophies.
I predict we will spend 8-10m on a loan for Sahin, which is a stopgap solution as far as I'm concerned. Then after he goes we say "Oh but we have Diaby and Ramsey and Wilshere there".

wildly speculative g88ner? man, you are too nice. Really, you should call it as it is when shit like that is spouted - but you're far too nice and diplomatic.franksav63 wrote:g88ner wrote:Sanity?highburyJD wrote:good to have some sanity back on the boardRosie_titters wrote:I believe Wenger is trying to win trophies, but in a financial way that won't cripple the club - Who wants to be the next Leeds, Pompey or Rangers
