What was your favourite season?

Post by SantaPoldi »

Doesn't have to be a season we won anything. What season of Arsenal's history would you love to be re-created in the present? For me it would have to be 1990-1. Used to go to Highbury as a Junior Gunner. Would play football in the morning then get the train to Arsenal with my Dad. Pay on the door, try to get in the "face in the crowd" photo and then a couple of lemonades in the pub after. Just seemed a lot more enjoyable then. Our rivals were Liverpool rather than City, United, Chelsea and Spurs. You didn't seem to get all the crap that has built up around football. Oh for those days again.

That's right, I believe the rivalry between arsenal and spurs starting in 2007

My favourite season was 97-98. Winning the double with a proper defence and the magic of db10 and overmars, not to mention the best midfield partnership of vieira and petit!
In fact I loved the whole squad, parlour wrighty anelka! All heroes to a 14yr old watching his beloved club announce its self as the dogs danglies! Highbury was a mass orgy of excitement at some of the play that year :barscarf:

Interesting question cos having been at Anfield in '89, it'd be tempting to say 1988/89. But the invincibles season would probably be my choice but 1997/8 clawing back the gap to United was magnificent too!!
(I used to be undecided but now I'm not so sure!!)

1988 - 1989.
Simply because I went to a lot of games and we won the league in such an exciting way with a decent amount of homegrown players and hardworking players.

88-89 first full season for me. Beating Liverpool to the title was a monumental achievement. They were the Barcalona of the '80's. Had a team that walked the title the previous year. We had a team largely made up of homegrown talent, with an old school Arsenal man at the helm. That team has been neglected by history because they couldn't achieve anything in Europe due to the ban.

2003-04

Went to my first Arsenal game and was the first season I religiously followed the club ater supporting it sine I was 5 (I was only 9 in 03, thankfully my mum saw to it that I was raised a Gooner :barscarf: ). Was a Junior Gunner and everything

But lets face it, it was the unbeaten run that made the season :D So happy that I was alive to see that as it wont happen again for any club. Although if you watch SSN then you'll be forgiven for thinking Chelsea have already done that

1988-89. It was just unthinkable that we would win the League. How we did it was just pure fiction. Whatever happened after that never came close apart from the 97-98 double which took us all by surprise and what a team. Look at us now eh !
Reason 2004 does not win is because it was all too easy. Football is at its best when it springs suprises. Its why we all still love it even with the unfair financial play these days.

90-91 went to nearly every game paying £7.50 cash on the gate, next to dugouts. Think I missed Cambridge Utd in Cup & Coventry final match, both were lock outs. In The Arsenal Tavern before the ManUre game on that Bank Holiday(?) watching Forest vs Liverpool & Ian Woan penalty. The place went mental, even the Mancs went mad... Until one went a bit far & got up on the pool table & someone launched a can of Fosters at his head followed by a 6ft wood hatstand. Even the music was the bollox then. Oh Happy Daze!

Ah, Cambridge United in the cup ; I can't explain it, but for some rerason I have always remembered that the attendance was 42,960.

Weird.

Leaving aside successful seasons for obvious reasons, I hugely enjoyed 98-99, even though we ended up potless.

We were so close to another double, the Semi Final replay at Villa Park is still the best game I have ever been to.

We were neck and neck with United in the League until Winterburn got injured at Elland Rd, then Vivas came on, lost his man at the back post and we lost 1-0, and that was that.

*sigh*

2001-2002. Was my first year at uni and the team did the business on the pitch. I was stuck in a halls of residence with lots of people who supported liverpool (one of them was a scouser and he was a tw4t of the highest order), a spurs fan (hahahaha) a norwich fan and some other randoms who would usually end up rooting for the victims or the mancs. My favourite moment would be watching us vs the mancs at OT. There were about 50 people in the bar and I ran up to the stage and shouted "In your face" like a complete nutter and none of them could say a thing. Then they showed the two fat guys with the "Old Trafford Champions Section" banner and I lost it :barscarf: :barscarf:

My 2nd favourite season would be the invincibles. By that stage I was in my 3rd year at uni and I had completely given up studying (ended up with a 2.2) and so my interests were clubbing, house music and football. I mostly went to away games (lived in York) and went to OT, Maine Rd, Stadium of Shite, Scousers etc. Brilliant season. I remember watching the team at Main Road, in that sh1tty away stand that was basically some scaffolding and the two fat guys with the "OT champions section" banner were there... and we got clapped by the Citeh fans when it came out...

Good times :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf:
