Re: Overrated Players
Pepe Reina... Is it just me or has he been rank average for a good few years now?
Re: Overrated Players
has was crap against the russians bar the goal after he fell over. against the other mob he had a poor a first half as i have ever seen a player have at Arsenal. yes he got two goals but face it the lad just ain't good enough.Red Member wrote:does no one remember how effective Walcott was last season?
v Chelsea ?
v Spurs ?
you see you need the BIG players in the BIG games.
there are a lot of people on here with selective memories.

Re: Overrated Players
At Arsenal it's Gervinho, obvious target but I'm afraid it's true..You know what you are going to get from him which is nothing but frustration.
Otherwise I think it's Steven Gerrard, a good Premier player but no more than that.He came on the scene at the height of the Vieira /Keane era and the media had to throw an Englishman into the mix. He does come up with goals in big games, but he hides quite a lot but is immune to criticism by the media. Now he will probably destroy us Sunday.
Anderson at United is another who outlasted his talent.

Re: Overrated Players
Some interesting shouts in there, here's my take.
Reina: used to think he was the best around but agree the past few years the bloke has just dropped too many clangers, would've been picked up on more had Liverpool actually been challenging for the league/CL.
Gerrard: Agree over the past few years, the bloke is well past his sell-by date now and puts in only a handful of really inspired performances a year. Not sure about him at his peak though, rated him as pretty quality and to be fair it was the only time he was being enabled to play by good players like Alonso.
Anderson: United's Diaby. Always "wait until he gets fit for a while" and then when he does people will realise how average he is.
Ronaldo: Not sure I'd say he's overrated, I think Messi is better myself but apart from him there's nobody near Ronaldo in world football.
I know you could put more or less any Liverpool player in here due to the extent of their fans' delusions but have to give a special mention to Lucas, who after several good games out of nearly 200 Liverpool appearances was touted as the reason that Liverpool's season imploded last year.
Also, Gary Cahill. Positionally awful last year for Bolton, this was covered up somewhat when at Chelsea by being surrounded by players able to bail him out and a few last-ditch challenges. Being English + being able to score a few goals + makes a few 'heroic blocks' = media darling.

And people claim Red is WUM.kite wrote:C. Ronaldo - so many do belive he is as good or even better than Messi![]()

Ronaldo is the only player in the world anywhere near Messi. Sure he doesn't have the close control and skill of Messi but he is quicker with and without the ball and is a genuine threat in the air.
He also has a better dead ball delivery.
While not the best, I'd say he is the most complete / best all-round footballer in the world right now.
He is still an

been saying that all year and if we dont he will probably join the exodus

Our best player is Jack Wilshere,.. Vermaelen, Chamberlain, Arteta, I still rate Szczesny and Sagna does his job in the team far better Walcott.

Cripes, that's an unexpected one. Someone will say Rocastle next

Actually, i thought Merse was fantastic when he was younger, but we got rid at the right time.

Re: Overrated Players
When Merson was sold I actually wrote to David Dein saying the club was betraying it's supporters by selling a player loved by the supporters. I got a reply from his secretary saying that Paul Merson's transfer was in the interest of all parties involved.
The following May when we were celebrating the Double Merson was a forgotten man. I think Wenger would have suffered if we had won nothing that season. i always thought he was a quality player but should have achieved more .

Dont get me wrong i thought Merse was a good player but not the outstanding one people seem to remember these days, therefore i think he's over-rated

Re: Overrated Players
Merson!!!!!
Overrated!!!
wTF!
That kid was sensational 10 games a season and pissed the rest...yet scores 99 goals from all angles with headers, left foot volleys, right foot pile drivers and he had pace.
Loved his goal at Anfield in 91 and his stormer v Leeds in 93.
The lad was one of us, genuine and loved the shirt albeit a Chav fan.
Mate no offence but I actually think the Magic Man under achieved and had he stayed off the booze and punter shit he may have nailed 150+ goals for Arsenal.
Wow, Merse over rated!!!
