Overrated Players

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

That kid was sensational 10 games a season and pissed the rest...yet scores 99 goals from all angles with headers, left foot volleys, right foot pile drivers and he had pace.

Loved his goal at Anfield in 91 and his stormer v Leeds in 93.

Mate no offence but I actually think the Magic Man under achieved and had he stayed off the booze and punter shit he may have nailed 150+ goals for Arsenal.

Wow, Merse over rated!!!
I was there for his goal at Anfield in '91 as i was for probably 80 of his 99 goals but still doesnt make me change my mind on Merse

been saying that all year and if we dont he will probably join the exodus
thats just a stupid post and when you add in the fact that he was on the bench on sunday, it makes it an even more of a stupid post.

The following May when we were celebrating the Double Merson was a forgotten man. I think Wenger would have suffered if we had won nothing that season. i always thought he was a quality player but should have achieved more .
Have a hell of a lot of adulation for Merse and although he was a bit before my time having read both his books and several other autobiographies of players that played with him, it's obvious he cared (and still cares very much) about the club. However, even he admitted he had no regrets about leaving and probably wouldn't have fitted in fantastically under the Wenger regime, and it was hardly like he went on to set the world on fire, the only time he really prospered was in the Championship for a season with Pompey. He said it himself, the reason he left was because Boro doubled his wages, Wenger asked him to stay but he went for the money so I don't really have any sympathy about being left on 99 goals or not being a part of the Double.

There are some real candidates for the title of most overrated player including such luminaries as our very own Theo Walcott, Luis Suarez,Edin Dzeko and particularly Stewart Downing.

However one name stands above all else to me

James "Average" Milner - £25m spent on "workrate". Lots of running around and effort but no skill or technique, the perfect symbol of the modern day English footballer.

Yeah LDB Reina of the past few seasons drops clangers like they're going out of fashion.

Milner, massive shout! Aside from the ridiculous fee, every time he turns in a half-decent performance the idiots at Sky swoon over him and claim that's what he's been doing all season without any appreciation (despite the fact he's been rotting on the bench most of the year).

Merson was a fucking amazing player.

A real footballers footballer. Man that boy could ball.

Completely.

Short pass, intermediate pass, long pass, pretty one twos, dribbling, through balls. Name it, the *word censored* could do it.

He's most likely the reason why, after always of growing up with Georges Arsenal I still tried to convince every *word censored* we could still play football.

He's like John the Baptist paving the way for Jesus (Bergkamp) Christ.

Gotta agree. Merse had a wonderful range of passing, especially the long range ones with the outside of his boot. Scored some absolute pearlers also :D Loved his cheeky black tooth grin when he'd smashed one in :barscarf:

Back on topic, Scott Parker has got to be up there with the most overrated players at the moment. Pundits were going hyperbole about him last season and during the Euros :?

Wow, Merse over rated!!!

Merse was great, possibly one of the most naturaly gifted but due to his well documented problems and lack of application never quite reached the heights his talent should have. (still won plenty of medals though)

I can recall a conversation with some Palace fans in the pub before a match against them and they were saying we were a one man team (Wright) I disagreed and said that Merse could destroy them on his day if he wanted to - he duly obliged with a stunning display and a hat trick (possibly the only 1 of his Arsenal career) :barscarf:

I felt sooooooo smug.

And it is obvious despite the club showing him the door at 99 goals, he still has an enormous love for us - but is not afraid to criticise where we are going wrong, which some Gooners see as being a traitor, whereas I think he is speaking how he see's it ( same as wright, mc lintock, groves etc, etc - they ain't all disloyal are they)
