Are we really that outnumbered by the AKBs?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Are we really that outnumbered by the AKBs?

Post by Sutch »

I'll probably get flak for going down this route again and this will possibly be locked later, but I'm putting this anyway.

Seeing the divide between our fanbase for the past few years over the differing Wenger opinions, people usually say we're massively outnumbered by AKBs/JCLs. While I used to believe this was accurate, I think numbers for our side has increased over the past year and while we're still outnumbered, there are more and more dissenting voices towards Wenger.

A good example of this was in Jan, when the Arshavin substitution backlacsh occurred. The choruses of "You don't know what you're doing" aimed at Wenger showed a large number publicly going against the fool. This was surprising to me, as 50% of our home fans are JCLs who never make any noise at games and fanatically back anything Wenger says or does. But this was solid proof that large numbers are willing to make noise against Wenger. Things can be done against him, despite the previous line of thought that there wouldn't be enough numbers to condemn Wenger. Of course on sites you see people defend Wenger, half of these are people who have never been to an Arsenal game in their life so you can't really go on that.

Now with our disgrace of a deadline day last night, I would bet more people would be willing to vocally attack Wenger than say, three months ago. We all saw Blackburn fans showing their dissatisfaction/hatred for Kean last season, who's to say we can't do it against Wenger? Of course any event would be best aimed at both Wenger and the board, but would any of the BSM members on here know if an anti-Wenger + anti-board protest could be staged? A couple on here have a banner for starters after all

A look at comments left on Arseblog and Gunnerblog suggests that AKBs are about 80% of the fanbase, Wenger out Brigade are about 15%, and the Poor Righteous Teachers are the 5% who overstand the financial implications of the stadium and hence are resigned to our fate whoever is our manager.

Yeah, but those blogs are the AKB's refuge. I really can't believe that we are less then 30%-40% of the whole thing these days.

I think his time needs to end but are you seriously advocating behaving like the Blackburn fans did towards Kean last year???

I'd rather him gone but I personally would never seek to make our home ground an environment like Ewood Park and make us lose points because of it.

Yes, you really are outnumbered by the "AKB".

It's just the nobheads constantly hurling abuse at Wenger are heard a disproportionate amount of the time because they can't help gobbing off all the time.

Even if we finished 10th this season I'm certain we'd never witness that kind of Ewood Park behaviour...

Far too stuffy n conservative to be treating one as such...Yar

Got to be about 80% or maybe 75% that still love Wenger.

Ins and outs of it should be discussed on Sammy's Wenger Thread.

Regardless of the fact we might be outnumbered, I find the lack of action from the Wenger Out Brigade more worrying. We aren't going to try and make changes and sway opinions if all we can do is moan on the Internet. I want to see more action taken to try and improve the state of affairs at the club and make the club aware of the discontent.

I'd say most fans are very frustrated with our recent league placings but deep down accept the financial restrictions the club is under with the stadium debt. Also the fact that we simply cannot compete financially with the likes of Abrahmovic and Sheik Mansoor cannot be ignored.

Also I'm sure there are others like me, who whilst although frustrated with things currently, fans that don't forget Wenger's previous achievements for the club, without being an ardent "AKB".

What as opposed to the 'Wenger is the professor' and ' In Arsene we trust' and the 'You're not a loyal supporter' or the 'Fuck off to the Bridge' lot. Because we never hear a peep out of them do we?

Granted, sometimes the criticism can be a bit barbaric and repetitive. However, if you express any sort of criticism towards Wenger at all then the response of a majority of people will be to tell you to go and support Chelsea or City or something equally childish, as though being an Arsenal fan means you have to 100% back everything the board or manager does. I just can't understand how so many people can be happy with selling our best players to better teams every year and replacing them with cheaper options, and even remain convinced that Wenger is somehow going to continue this policy and still make up the 19 point gap between us and the best.
