this is funny, had Mertesacker played and made mistakes, people would be saying Wenger should have gone with our 'best' defender last year kosceilny.

Lets be real here. Chelsea are a good side, certainly in passing terms, now if you give them two freebies like we did, you can moan about Giroud, gervinho or whatever you deserve nothing!! Moaning about subs please!

Those two defensive mistakes plus the original vermaelen foul are all the reasons we lost.

We just better hope that these days we work on our defensive laspses in training, rather than getting our defenders involved in passing drills.

I still believe that we should have gone with kos but alongside mertesacker not instead of him 8) How can he drop any of the defenders that played so well against citeeh ? That it is our captain that loses out is irrelevent to me

Can't moan about subs? Even when they miss open goals? What the fuck are we going to talk about then - how nice the emirates toilets are?

Blimey Demun, you're not about to join the dark side are you?

Many things contributed to this defeat IMHO. The chavs were just the better team on the day, not by much, but they were. Ramsey is (and has been for years) very poor. He offers very little going forward or defending. Many of our players seemed out of sorts and our passing was a bit sloppy. Kos made two really bad mistakes. Giroud missed an absolute sitter. I could go on.

But for me the main contributing factor is this stupid fucking zonal marking bollocks.

IT. DOES. NOT. WORK. END. FUCKING. OF. :banghead:

Unless you have 4 absolutely top defenders and a couple of top midfielders who are all incredibly well drilled in it and very disciplined, zonal marking just does not work. It goes against a player’s natural reactions; ie; to track and challenge the man. We do not have good enough defenders to use zonal well. Few teams do, in all honesty.

Our defence is much better (so far) this year in general. But how many of the few goals we have conceded have come from set pieces where some of our defenders have held their zone whilst others have gotten distracted and wondered towards their man?

I didn't buy into the media view that Chelsea were outstanding...they came with a game plan which they executed and in that alone they deserved a win. They didn't dominate Arsenal, they stopped Arsenal dominating and stopped Arsenal passing. Some of Arsenal's decision making particularly on those two free kicks was criminal.
I thought Gervinho apart from the goal was predictable, in other words awful, thought the Ox had a poor game, Cazorla was poor, Kos was a disaster on both goals.I thought the simple difference between Arsenal and Chelsea were Chelsea done the basic things correctly most times Arsenal didn't. I think next May that will sum up both club's seasons. I do believe that given his performances so far this season Mert deserved to retain his place. Kos and Vermalen were our best central defenders last season , Mert has been this season and should have started. It was Kos and TV5's first start together and it wasn't the game to do it.

You're right. And this statement alone highlights how shockingly mediocre this current ensemble is. Fact is, Chelski didn't have to ever get out of second gear to comfortable see this Arsenal side off! I can understand how confusing it must be to any Arsenal fan mind, to see a team go out with clear tactical instructions to shut out the opposition based on drills and their manager's tactical set-up... :rubchin:

Fact is although he is generally regarded as a very good defender I wouldn't say that he's undroppable and indeed would have considered leaving TV5 out against Chelsea after our performance at Citeh. Likewise with Kos despite having a great season last year.

Baba you can't turn round and slate Giroud for missing an absolute sitter on one hand (I presume you have, that's the general consensus anyway) yet say Chelsea were comfortable. We were shite, yes, and they executed a game plan, yes, but in between that we should still have got a point given their dearth of chances, reliance on our defensive mistakes and us still managing to forge a few opportunities.
