Bans. A mod prerogative? (OK Chippy ??? )

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

OK, lets move on from the Oxford dictionary definition of 'trolling' - a word that until internet geeks intervened a couple of years ago, probably meant to dress up as a figure from Norse mythology and hide underneath a bridge.

I have gone back through Baba's posts in the Olympiakos game and I don't see the problem. The worst crime he committed there was to say he was watching the City game instead.

There are a number of us, myself included, who are generally on the glass half empty side. What's so different about the way he puts it over ?

Personally, I don't think there's anything much worse than coming out with bullshit comments about wishing that one of your own players had both of his legs broken. If anyone thinks that's more acceptable than some of the silly comments made by Red or some of the arguments made by Baba, then I don't understand that point of view at all.

We are all supporters of Arsenal - not supporters of sid, or Red Member, or Baba - so for me the lowest form of abuse is that sort of crap comment about Ramsey. How did all genuine Arsenal fans feel that evening at Stoke watching the lad laying there with his leg dangling off whilst abused by the local neanderthals, and then defended afterwards by that shitebag Pulis? I know how I felt - just ever so slightly more pissed off than I did when Red wanted Almunia brought back in to the team, or Baba called someone 'Arsene's little helper'

We all like different players, but when serious injury is wished upon one of our own, who happens to try his heart out every game (not always to great effect admittedly) then that is simply bollocks and if that's not trolling then I don't know what is

Anyway.....happy Friday !
SteveO i explained on the other thread why Sid was banned for 7 days as opposed to a permanent ban, i thought you understood that? If anyone missed that let me know and i'll copy and paste it onto here. Top Londoner says in his OP that its a democracy here well i can tell you from the posts i saw and pm's i received i would guess that the majority wanted something done about Red and Baba

Great. You read his comments on one thread. Now read them all on all his threads. I have. So have all the mods (apart from shit-mod stoner Hlebby  ).

Sorry, but you still don't get it, SteveO. He wasn't banned for his opinions - most of us agree with alot of them - he was banned for his conduct. That conduct being almost constant provocation, personal abuse, sidetracking threads (with what in some cases just became anti-Arsenal abuse), winding up other regular members etc etc.

You will have to look at the bigger picture; his conduct over a long period of time was having an overly negative affect upon the forum and ruining the enjoyment of far too many other regular members. He ignored warnings to modify his behaviour.

You do know Sid has been given a temporary ban for that comment, don't you? - we all seem to be in agreement that it was a very distasteful comment, and yes, I think it definitely falls under the category of trolling, as you rightly point out.

But I get the feeling you're hinting (loudly   ) of double standards? - if so, I'm not sure I agree.

For both Babatunde and RedMember, permanent bans represent the end of a very long road. For months, the Mod's have repeatedly asked both of them to stop wumming, and repeatedly, they've ignored those requests. This has, over many months, led to several warnings, and eventually temporary bans. Sadly, despite the bans, our requests for them to stop wumming were again repeatedly ignored. Eventually, with it clear that they had no intention of changing their ways, it was deemed necessary to issue permanent bans.

Sid will be treated the same way. He's been warned in the past, and following the Ramsey comment, it was deemed necessary to issue a temporary ban. Obviously, the hope is that he takes that on board and calms down.

IMO I think the Mods get it about right.
Red Member's comments were inane, sometimes made me smile, sometimes mad me angry, but I didn't find them offensive.
Baba is a whole different story. I have no problem with his views, though I disagree with many if them. What does justify his ban (and I am surprised by SteveO's comments) is the constant, really nasty abuse. His posts are usually long-ish and often half are insults.

Freedom of speech has to be tempered. It is not acceptable to run into a cinema and shout FIRE!! Most people on here are forthright but within limits. When posters hijack threads with paragraphs and paragraphs of abuse we need the Mods to step in.
Personally, I think they were too quick with Red and too slow with Baba, but they have the job and give up their time to keep this site functioning and if some of us think they are too slow and others too quick, they're probably getting it about right.

I've been Moderator on another forum that I no longer post on (that was bigger than this one) and I can say that it is a thankless task. In some ways it's like being a referee - you have one set of people telling you to do one thing, one set of people telling you to do the other, and then when you make a decision inevitably the group you didn't side with make a lot of noise and the group who agree with your decision stay silent. Utterly thankless, but having been in that position I know it's a judgment call, thought goes into it, and then a decision is made. That's why I for one just let them get on with it. (Not a pop at others, just my opinion of what they do/I did, remember that is what we are all here for ;))

In terms of Baba and Red I don't think they are of any great loss to the forum, literally looking at post history Baba repeats the same points over and over, and if someone calls him on something a lot of the time he resorts to personal insults or just ignoring it as if his point is always right. Even when he has got things wrong he just completely ignores that he said it in the first place and moves on to more negative posting. It brings any thread down and most threads he's posted in die shortly afterwards. With Red it's the same sort of thing, but without the personal insults, I think he was harmless yes but I can see why people would get p!ssed off after a while, and if he was warned and didn't listen then I have no sympathy for him. It is a forum where opinions can be voiced, but if you don't follow the ground rules and bring down the quality of every thread, then unfortunately it's curtains.

The reality is there is always one person who has ownership of a forum and they will make the decisions on how it is run. There are ground rules in place here, the mods make sure they are followed, and if you don't like it you know where the door is. That's not my opinion, it's the opinion of the owner.

That's my tuppence worth anyway. :barscarf:

Yes, yes, yes,...Okay we all know why they (Redwumber and blahblah) were banned, they had numerous chances to reign their wumming and trolling (and insults in bllahblahs case) necks in but they didn't, so hey presto!...it all comes down to common sense and self-governance...and sadly common sense isn't so common these days....and some people just do not have a clue on how to conduct themselves in a way acceptable to the majority...If two people have a face to face disagreement about something and insults get thrown it can sometimes end in aggro...but when someone does it from behind the safety (cowardly more like) of their PC - knowing full well they can get away with it without getting a kicking' they will continue to do so, which is what blahblah did time and again, which not only made this forum a lesser place to visit , but also made huge amounts of extra work and hassle for the mods who do their jobs voluntarily and iMO very fairly.

But enough of this...Surely the more important issue is that I have been told that Mike (the owner) is Ginger!?    But if true then it makes a lot of sense and all the pieces begin to fall into place very nicely! It makes sense now why he has Two Mods (DB10 and Flash - also ginger daywalker mutants) on his modding team. :D

End of the day this is getting boring now. Babatunde and Red Member were both obvious wind-up merchants who would say anything to get people to bite and drag down any footballing threads. Obviously you need a bit of banter on here and it could be quite funny watching them say ridiculous things or taking the piss out of one of them but at the end of the day it's a football forum and they went out of their way every single day to ruin genuine football discussion. Couple that with the fact that there is an extra watchful eye on "abuse" from the owners and that the postings of those two made that about 3 times as likely to be infringed. If you want to talk about free speech, liberty etc then join Amnesty International. This is a forum for AFC fans and the two of those weren't.

So let's say someone posts a comment that you don't agree with is it OK to abuse them by calling them a "KNOBBER"? And if that was to happen, how should a mod react to this?

Let's see..........

This, this, this, this, THIS!!!!

My missus is off on a hen party for the weekend :barscarf: so I'm stopping off for a take away on the way home from work. At home you shall currently find 20 bottles of cider chilling to perfection in the freeze box which should compliment my dinner perfectly. I'll make a dent on those tonight, polish em off tomorrow before The Arsenal and then out after to get absolutely bladdered.

Ahh like the good ol' days.

So if that doesen't call for a tit thread I don't know what does. :D

Personally I'd like to ban anyone who can't spell prerogative... oh and those that say would of, could of etc instead of would have..

My new tee shirt

Unfortunately my fellow mods restrain me!

I really wish people would lighten up. It's an internet forum provided for free so that most of us can have a bit of banter about Arsenal and other things. Enjoy it without ruining the enjoyment of others. 8)

No one gets banned over a throw away comment or a bit of abuse. They get banned for REPEATED breaking of the rules or REPEATED trolling/WUMing. For the love of fucking Kerry Katona - is this so fucking hard to understand??!! :banghead:
