in your world WTF is challenging Watson?
  Yes the final in 2006 hence the 6 years  As mentioned the last time we were in a semi we were turned over by United at home :rubchin: Can you honestly say we were in with a serious shout of winning the trophy when we got knocked out all those other years in the quarters and round of 16 by Barca, Liverpool, PSV etc. That to me is competing, look at the number of finals United have been in over the past few years, getting knocked of in the quarters when you've made it through your group comprising of such giants as Slavia Prague, Standard Liege etc.

this statement

is pure nonsense
getting to the qurters, semis and the final IS challenging
ManUre never had a chance v Barca in the final.
I won a good old chunk on Barca -1
Still would be ludicrous for me to say they didn't challenge.

who have we knocked out in the last 6 years? - and who has knocked us out? That should answer your question about what "challenging" means.

I'll answer the question....

2006/07 - beaten in first knockout round by PSV :(
2007/08 - knocked out AC Milan :barscarf: then got knockout out by Liverpool :(
2008/09 - beat Roma and Villarreal, then knocked out by United :(
2009/10 - beat FC Porto, then knocked out by Barca :(
2010/11 - beaten in first knockout round by Barca :(
2011/12 - beaten in first knockout round by AC Milan :(

So, we've been beaten in the FIRST KNOCKOUT ROUND for the last 2 years, and 3 of the last 6 years. We've only knocked out FOUR teams in those 6 years... and apart from Milan in 2007/08, they've all been against teams we'd expect to beat before being dispatched by PSV, Liverpool, United, Barca (twice) and Milan.

And we've only knocked out ONE team in the last 3 years! (a terrible Porto side that we hammered)

So when you say "WTF is challenging Watson?", I'd say the record above is NOT challenging. It's making up the numbers and giving the genuine CL contenders a tricky tie.

If you dont have a serious chance of winning a trophy imo thats just making up the numbers. its like a league 1 side having a good cup run for 3 years, they aren't serious challenging if they get to the quarters 3 years in a row as they will be eventually knocked out by a far superior team.

No shit Sherlock but you still fail to grasp the point DB10 and Cook are making. Whats the point of pinning our hopes on qualifying for a tournament that we havent seriously challenged in in 6 years. the one time we got to a semi we got hammered by United at home in the 2nd leg.
The point is you need to be bleedin in the fuckn comp to attract good players...take pool for example...not being able to bring in any stars...if we're not in the cl wallnut wont b here nx season for sure

To what end though? Were not competing for the CL nor the Premier League so we are essentially getting into the CL so we can attract players who help us maintain 4th place who in turn help us attract players to maintain 4th place. Its just goes round in circles. I accept the fact that we need to be in it but if were not competing then what is the point really we may as well finish 5th.

You have to admit JD, that g88ner makes some salient points.

Tonight I think that we will win 3-2, and the other match in our group to be a score draw. That will set the cat among the pigeons.

Now, don't forget, when you get there tonight:

don't light up a fag
don't stand
no swearing or berating
spend your hard earned on a burger or in the shop
and stop complaining.  :barscarf:

If that's a response to my post, then it's rubbish. A total cop out. :(
