An urgent plea to Arsene supporters..

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Calling it nothing is insane.
Claiming it can be done by somebody with no managerial skill is straight nuts.
I think you'd be pleasantly surprised how many middle of the road managers could achieve those dizzy heights on the same shoe string wage budget of 140 million quid per annum that the messiah gets lauded for.

highburyJD wrote:I tried to start a thread about Wengers strengths - nobody here would accept any whatsoever
The central argument I'm fighting here is I believe Wenger has talent (flaws too of course)
the counter argument seems to be he doesn't possess ANY ABILITY WHATSOEVER
seems many here can't accept any strengths, believe he's 100% useless,
its a deeply stupid argument,
Claiming Wenger is totally without merit is talkshite phone in level nonsense,
its an internet rant, want-it-now mummy, manchild tantrum attitude, a clouded reality.

To be fair JD, I posed the same question a couple of times on here to those who think Wenger deserves to stay – once to you directly (with no reply :() and another time just generally – and I've still yet to see any supporter of Wenger actually make a case for what areas of football management he currently excels in. Same goes for his supporters out in the big bad real world, and the window lickers in the press.

Given all the flaws and mistakes over the last 5,6 years surely if he's had enough strong points over that same time to outweigh all of them then his supporters should be putting them forward instead of just the generic "he's kept us top 4" argument. Tactics, motivation, man-management, transfers – on all fronts (those in, those out, those shaking it all about, those he realistically could've signed but didn't, those he should have sold but kept), improving players etc etc. I genuinely can't think of one area of management where I'd say the Wenger of today really excels. And I've never listened to talksport once in my life. I'm genuinely curious as to what qualities you think Wenger 2.0 brings to the table that make him a top class manager worthy of a club like Arsenal? :?

I am somewhere in the middle of this argument. I don't think that Wenger is talentless, however, from a tactical perspective he is very naive. Recently, his buys have been awful and the myth about creating these world class players is exactly that a myth - or perhaps a bygone day. He used to be good at it, but he isn't anymore.

He has had a lot of money at his disposal to spend on players and players wages and recently, has hung himself with the amount of crap that he has bought. Trying to indoctrinate his squad into a Socialistic-Arsenal has proven to be incredibly stupid as well. So now we are stuck with people on the wages who will not leave because of the money - like Bendtner, Chamakh, Squillachi, etc. That is his fault along with the tactics.

Also, we have been giving contract extensions to injury prone players. Why? Why is Diaby on so much when he never plays? The same with Rosicky. He is a good player when he is fit, but when is he fit? Poor management.

The thing is that I believe that with a proper tactician, we could get a lot more out of these players than Wenger currently gets because clearly these players do not have the creativity and flair of Arsenal teams in the past. If you look at us now, you see not enough width and when there are crosses, no one (bar Giroud) seems to be in the box. That is ignoring a good percentage of your attack which is negligent and our defense is still a liability. The same attack and same defending over and over again. Again, a fault with the coaching. And this has been going on for quite a few seasons now. We have been relatively lucky that we had RVP last year or we'd probably have finished nowhere near 3rd.

So for those reasons that I have outlined above, I want to see the back of Wenger.

That's actually very good! Bit worrying that the first thing you got from my post was Spice Girls though.

Nope. Not good enough, Hlebby. You have to be born there too. You are a mere Lesser Spotted Wannabe Superfan. Sorry mate. You are not qualified to comment on Arsene Football Club. :(

After finally attaining his superfan badge after years of trekking barefoot across England and Europe he now has his sights set on the "30-year managerial" badge, which is the final step required to be able to comment on football.

I don't even go to that many away games, prob less than half
it is funny though, when the part-timers get all sensitive about attendance.
I've met people who have never been to, or even played, a game of football who have still taught me new things about the game. I had a great day with RioGooner celebrating the 5per2 game.
He's (obviously) not a regular attendee, but 100% knows his stuff.

My stated opinion, that I think started this: that people who actually follow the team have a very different opinion about the importance of the Champions League
this has hurt the feeling of some amongst you - those who are disinclined (or too poor, foriegn, henpecked... lazy?) to attend CL away games.
You'll get over it (just say to yourselves I don't really believe it or I'm trying to wind you up)

And where does your love of being the centre stage of Europe fit in with that?

Surely the superfans are too wrapped up in their European adventure to care who else is watching the game across Europe? Besides, I can't think of anybody that would be choosing to watch us scrape past Montpellier at home ahead of City v Madrid or Ajax v Dortmund.

I guess given that I'm not from the People's Republic of Islington I couldn't hope to understand.

I'll pre-empt your reply:
