The Official Goalkeeper Thread

Post by Arsenal Till I Die »

I know there are various GK threads dotted about but I thought we could just centralize the topic and have one big thread for it. If its a bad idea then just lock it.

Our 'keeper position hasn't been solid since Lehmann was dropped back in 2006/07 for Almunia. Lehmann got pissed about it and never played much, Almunia, all though at the time put in some fairly promising performances, always had a cock up in him and that cock up ensured that a for the next few games after the mistake he would panic if a football entered the same postcode as him.

For me, Wojciech Szczesny has the ability to be a top class goalkeeper - in a few YEARS! The boy has made some bad decisions in games which show us - and the rest of the world - that he still has a bit to learn. He really isn't as good as HE thinks HE is. If he doesn't get the competition that a young 'keeper needs and I would say strives, he will continue to be a mediocre 'keeper who will never fulfill his full potential

Fabianski will never be good enough to provide Szczesny with competition and has often cost us in games - Porto being the most painful to remember. Mannone will be a good goalkeeper.....for the Hull's, Sheffield United's Falkirk's of the world, never going to be a top draw 'keeper. Had a fantastic game at Fulham a few years back when he single handedly got us the three points by keeping Fulham at bay but has been ''meh'' ever since.

I do personally hold high hopes for Damian Martinez, he has had glowing references from youth level and I think he needs a loan spell for a year or two in a relegation battle type club to help him gain experience of pressure at the first team level. I know he had a 'mare at Reading but I still hold high hopes.

I still think we need to sign a proven goalkeeper to challenge Szczesny. Apparently we've got a shortlist of three 'keepers. Reina, Vorm and Sorensen. What are peoples thoughs on those targets? (source - http://www.goal.com/en-za/news/2896/pre ... -keeper-in)

Given my daily 'medicinal' intake, I can assure you that I'm only miserable when watching Arsenal nowadays.

It's Quartz he has to look out for as he is sure to try and merge it with some other - probably unrelated - thread in an effort to appear useful!! :banghead:

I honestly believe this thread should be locked for the following reasons....

1. Wenker has NO SENSE when it comes to the position of Goal Keeper/s

2. Wenker is inept when it comes to buying.signing Goal Keepers

3. The names Almunia, Flappyanski and Mannone might begin to appear on a regulat basis and give us even more nightmares and bouts of depression than we are already experiencing in this current (team is playing shyte) climate.

4. Almunia already has his own *word censored* thread - and thus needs no further publicity..why? coz he is a *word censored*.

5. The position of Goal Keeper is an anathema to wenker and this thread will only detract from this FACT!

Think you've just about got everything there OBG. Time saved not spent posting on our goalkeeping situation could be spent on far more enjoyable activities. Like trying to tickle your retina with a razor blade.

Buying goalkeepers seems to be a perilous business (see Fergie's record). In the past keepers have been bought because they're great shotstoppers but when transferred to a big club where positioning, anticipation, concentration etc are more important they're found wanting.

Often they're considered 'great' then become shit (Robinson, Green, Reina etc).

A good one is worth their weight in gold but finding them seems to be a problem.

He's bought two very good keepers: Lehmann and Manninger.

Imo Lehmann in 2003/4 was immense, he made a few silly errors but most of these were just down to him being a complete maverick. Very good keeper, unfortunately a few years too old in the long-run.

Wouldn't have won the league without Manninger in 97/98, real pity we let him go because we're dying for a keeper of his quality now (even if he hasn't lived up to potential since we sold him).

Can't agree on Manninger mate - another "Hollywood save" keeper like Fabianski (albeit 1000x better than that useless *word censored*). A great reaction save usually followed up by a flap at a cross or a corner resulting in a goal. Give me and old skooler like Spunky every day.....just casually stand underneath the cross and pluck it out of the air without fuss. No punching, no flapping, no wafting your arms around like Rafa Benitez......just go about your business like calmness personified. It certainly helps the backline knowing they haven't got some kamikaze cock like Flapper coming off his line every 30 seconds

By the way, Martinez looks fucking hopeless as well. Chesney looks like the only decent keeper at the club (haven't seen Shea so reserve judgement on him)
