First player to kiss the badge

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

First player to kiss the badge

Post by This Is The Daybreak »

After seeing Adel Taarabt kiss the QPR badge on Saturday and seeing numerous mercenaries like Van Stapleton and Adecashwhore do it for us these last few seasons I was wondering where this started. I never recall the likes of Tony Adams ever doing it (though I might be wrong). I wonder who started it all, was it a continental thing? I never remember it happening pre 2000s

Don't know who was first but I do remember David Dunn when he was at Blackburn, probably about 10 years ago. He scored, ran to the crowd and tried to kiss the club badge - trouble is he chose the wrong side of his shirt so ended up kissing the shirt manufacturer's logo (Kappa).

Pretty ironic really - or maybe Dunn was just ahead of the times. Lets face it, 10 years later the club badge hardly matters to most players nowadays . . . . . . .

It was David Beckham!

Golden Balls done everything first. He was the first player to score from inside his own half, first player to marry a pop star and the first player to have an affair with a filthy little slosh pot.

He was also the first person ever, ever to break a bone in his foot and the first person ever, ever, ever to say "you know" between every single word whilst being interviewed on TV.

Official history books show that the football/soccer legend first kissed the badge in 1952 after scoring a hat-trick against Pele who was making his debut for Brazil in goal aged 9 years old.
