Pat Rice MBE
Re: Pat Rice MBE
Fully deserved. No one could put out a mean cone better than he did.

Re: Pat Rice MBE
a proper arsenal man, well deserved

Re: Pat Rice MBE
Well pleased for the man
He has taken a bit of flak from some Gooners in recent years for not being more forceful with wenger (the phrase yes man was suggested frequently) so if anything, wenger's treatment of Bouldie should show ye all how open to suggestions the French c**t is
On a separate (but related issue), is there anyone in Britain that hasnt been knighted at this stage ?
Obviously I don't follow the workings of the system like you guys do but it seems to me that some honours are handed out so cheaply that it lessens the honour. I mean Bradley wiggins has one or two outstanding years and he gets knighted.......wtf ?
As much as I am a sports supporter I do question how their contribution to society merits being knighted but hey I am an Irishman so I don't really give a shit tbh and am just curious to how you guys feel about it

It's back-slapping pageantry and ceremonial nonsense to be honest. Some well-deserving members of the proletariat get gongs for doing worthy work but for anyone 'known' it basically allows them to put up their after dinner speaking fee by 20%.

Well done, Pat and completely deserved. It's about time that real football men were acknowledged rather than the usual chavvy scumbags that play for about an hour before getting an OBE.

Re: Pat Rice MBE
congrats Pat - 40 years at one club. a class act.
Re: Pat Rice MBE
There must be plenty of people who work for a company for 40 years....and most earn considerably less than Pat Rice.
So what exactly did he do to earn the MBE? Charity work...?
EDIT: It seriously does seem that he was given it for services to football.... Sorry, but that must be a joke

Re: Pat Rice MBE
Interesting take MK Gould. He is an Arsenal legend and puts 95% of modern PL footballers to shame BUT as you say is what he did really worthy of an honour? I guess when you hand Paul Collingwood an MBE for 17 runs then Pat Rice should have been knighted several times over, and tbh you could say that any sportsmen are just doing their job. But for me I would reserve honours for the very select few sportsmen right at the top of their profession, and not until they retired.
Re: Pat Rice MBE
Meet him once at the team hotel before a Cardiff FA cup tie, in no rush, he spoke about when Arsenal asked him to come back to be part of the coaching staff. At the time I think he was playing at Watford,In his words, the money much less than he was getting but there was never any question about saying yes straight away. Genuine fella and down to earth.
Also at the time got few players cornered by the lift to get a photo, quite clear some of them found this a pain,

Re: Pat Rice MBE
Don't doubt he is a nice, genuine guy. And arsenal to the core. But he would have been on upwards of £0.25m pa so not like he was a long serving steward or member of the box office. He did "ok" as a player but can't claim an awful lot of credit for his part in wengers (or grahams) achievements as a manager..... I wonder how many offers he had to turn down in that 40 years (apart from watford of course).Tonyb wrote:Meet him once at the team hotel before a Cardiff FA cup tie, in no rush, he spoke about when Arsenal asked him to come back to be part of the coaching staff.
