Worst Performance of the Season (so far)?

Post by VoiceOfReason »

When the Gooner runs its end-of-season fan survey, one of the questions is 'which was the worst performance of the season'. Normally it's pretty easy to pinpoint the answer, but this season, there's just so many.

I didn't think we could get any worse than we did at Norwich in October, but the performance in the goalless draw at Aston Villa in November was equally pathetic. The Bradford debacle might win the poll due to the high-profile nature of the game and their lower-league standing, but the performance wasn't any worse than many others this season. The Southampton game just three days ago is another candidate.

So if you had to vote right now, which game would you go for?

Norwich and Schalke home are both contenders because I've never seen us look so little like scoring a goal. Villa wasn't far off and has the added factor of Wenger not even trying to win the game. Swansea was humiliating because we were outplayed by a fucking average team at home (although people are happier to brush this one aside and pretend Swansea were awesome). And of course Bradford speaks for itself. Says something that that shower of shite on NYD is struggling to make the top 5 performances of the first half of the season.

Gun to my head I'd probably say that having to watch Andre Santos' comedy routine against Schalke and our inability to register a shot on target for 92 minutes makes it the worst performance, although the circumstances behind the Villa draw are worse.

I think that mine would be Man Utd and it is because at this point, I realised how far we had fallen. Don't get me wrong - I am under no disillusion regarding the state of the squad, tactics, etc. but we usually turn up against the top teams and give them a go - sadly this told me how the season was going to pan out. We aren't even Flat Track Bullies anymore....

Probably Bradford or Swansea, the latter because it was on our own patch.

Although I think the Man United away game deserves a mention, despite the entirely expected outcome. We looked shit scared in that game, like a newly promoted side going to old toilet for the first time hoping to keep the score down (which we did, woooooooooo). We're the Arsenal, we've had a tradition going back long before I was born of being scared of nobody, especially not teams that are better then us. Add in the Santos half time debacle and for me, it was one of the most embarrassing games I've witnessed and I've seen us lose 8-2 and piss away 4 goal leads, lose from 2-0 at home to the scum and lose to Wigan while leading 2-0 with 20 minutes to go.

It's difficult to choose 1 stand out stinker of a performance as they happen so often these days.

We weren't great at home to Chelsea, dreadfully inept at Norwich and woeful at home to Schalke. Then we failed to even turn up at Old Trafford (apart from to swap shirts with Van Persie  ) and as dull as ditchwater at Villa. We were then given a footballing lesson at home by Swansea ( ), were embarrassingly dreadful at League 2 Bradford ( ) and atrocious at Southampton. And although great games for the neutral, defensively we were woeful against Fulham (3-3), Reading (7-5) and Newcastle (7-3).

Not a great season :(

The worst result so far has to be Bradford away but as said earlier Norwich (a), shalke (h) and Southampton (a) have been shockers. For me though the 7-5 win at Reading and 7-3 win against Newcastle have been the most embarrassing due to the Sunday League nature of the defending and scoreline

Bradford by a mile.

Was at the Saints game and we just never woke up but Bradford for effort was worse.

Everyone almost to a man was shit that day. No redeeming feature. TV's goal seemed a travesty. Losing abjectly and being out battled and out played by a division 4 team will always be worse than anything else we've done so far.

Although I've got a funny feeling we are going to get seriously bent over and bummed by Munich.

AW and the team humiliated in front of a nice global TV audience.

Bradford for now but scum away/Munich away could change that vote.

Got to be Swansea (h) for me.

Took the girlfriend to her first Arsenal prem game (carling cup for £10 don't count). Only to be turned over by a team who were far superior on the day, and to be outsung throughout the entire match by the away end.

She took me to Charlton a few weeks later to remind me of what a proper atmosphere in a ground was like. In the north stand, standing and singing it made me remember what I was missing since we moved to the bowl.

Bradford away- for me its got to be that game

Its one thing to get beat by a team from the 4th division with a bounce team filled with youngsters, that's humiliating. To get beat by a 4th division team with injuries to their 1st team players with our first XI is just off the scale.

United away for me was also a particular low point- seeing us getting stuffed 2-0 going on 5 or 6 and the genuinely friendly atmosphere between our players and Van Judas just highlighted the fact that we are no longer title contenders.

Norwich, Schalke, Swansea, Utd, Villa, Southampton & Bradford were all equally pitiful but simply because our overpaid primadonnas were unable to rouse themselves against a team 3 divisions beneath them, Bradford takes the biscuit.

I'm sure there'll be plenty more contenders for worst performance between now and May though. Utter humiliation & embarassement by Bayern anyone? I genuinely think we could ship 8 or 9 goals over those two legs...

So many contenders where do I start?!

Sunderland 0-0 at home opening day the alarm bells should have been ringing after but things only went on to get worse.

Chelsea 1-2 home defeat was an awful performance where we were totally bossed by the Chavs on our own patch. Gervinho alone up front did score but other than that did absolutely fuck all.

Norwich 0-1 away defeat was a shocker.

Schalke 0-2 at home again totally outplayed at home.

QPR 1-0 win at home I went to this one and although a win another very poor performance with 4-5-1 again favoured even at home v bottom of the league relegation fodder.

Reading 7-5 win away again I was there and was to witness the worst Arsenal first half I have ever seen us go 0-4 down. Obviously the comeback was epic but some of those first half performances were garbage.

Man Utd 1-2 loss score flattered us we never got near them plus the Santos/RVP half-time shirt swapping only made things more humilating and turned the afternoon into an embarressment.

Fulham 3-3 we looked like we were cruising at 2-0 up but our defensive play was appalling. We got an undeserved chance to win with a very dodgy penalty but even managed to fuck that up!

Villa 0-0 away we were simply awful and AW showed our lack of belief and ambition making a defensive substitution rather than going for a late winner.

Swansea 0-2 went to this one also and the only postitive for me was the BSM protest before the game. Swansea dominated the game and despite Sczeseny keeping us in it with several great saves we couldn't get near them all day and they totally deserved their win.

Bradford - think this has to be the winner to me - sending out pretty much a full strength first eleven to a League 2 to ensure we didn't fuck it up. And we still did.

Then 1-1 Saints away on the radio Mark Bright said "The worst Arsenal performance I have seen for many years"
