What if??

Post by spendsum4uckingmoney »

What if Wenger had sold Henry to Barca for 50m after the CL final of 05, instead of renewing his contract? Would the cash have given Wenger a new lease of life? Would the squad have improved?

Why would it? we got £40m when we sold Toure and Ade to Citeh; a further £60m in a fortnight when we sold Cesc and Nasri, and another £40m when we sold Van Persie and Song a year later. How was that approx £140m spent? - was it even spent in its entirety?

That's a lot of money we brought in, and yet not one £20m+ player was signed. We instead signed a whole host of cheaper players (with mixed results) and, not surprisingly, we've steadily regressed on the pitch.

Woulda been poured back into the stadium fund, like everything else around that time.

If we sold anyone for 50m even now, we wouldn't see most of that money re-invested in the club.

FFS we sold Robin for 24m and Song for 15m and spent about 25 on Giroud and Podolski together, then the club acts like we're splashing out the cash... :banghead:

Moving has cost us BIG time

I'd rather be at Highbury and have a squad that would be looking at veteran players like Campbell and Toure nurturing the new superstar wonder kid from Swaiziland.....

Spot on. Besides possibly winning the CL in 2006 I don't think any one event would have made any difference to our long-term fate. Even if we'd won the league in 2008 (which in reality was never going to happen with our fragile team) then that would have reinforced Wenger's belief that this method is correct and it may have delayed our decline by a year or so with the positive fallout.

I think the this question can be answered using simple mathematics......

Granny + balls = granda.

it doesn't explain it all though, sammy. if you believe the figures around the web we have over 50 million sitting on the bank, and when the squad needs reinforcements so bad, it's hard to understand why it's not spent.

that's where i disagree. winning the league is the best way to improve your finances - just ask manchester united, it's why their income on commercial deals is so better than anyone else's - everyone wants to sponsor a team that wins the league consistently.

if money were spent to strengthen the squad back in january 2008, we could have won the league, and that could've improved us in many senses - less players like cesc would want to move on, and more players we lost to competitors would prefer a move to the arsenal.

it's saturday night and i'm half drunk, so maybe that's all bullshit though
