Have you seen utds? Defending is so 2004! It's all about scoring more than the other team now :barscarf:

Spot on. This is purely a sticking plaster, smacking of a desperate grab for the first available 'name' that will think about joining us. I can see the bullshit excuses come April and May: "Well, we signed Villa for a top, top amount. What more do people expect me to do'?

FFS this is unbelievable..........we are a team totally devoid of a top quality striker and you think we should turn our nose up at villa cos he is 31 years old ?? Not alone do we need somebody of his immense talent (and that is the most important thing) but we also need to make a big signing to show intent to fans, sponsors and most importantly to other potential transfer targets and our existing players so that we stop this image of a selling club on the way down. Should I even need to list our existing group of "strikers" (and I use that term loosely   ) for you to see the need for a david villa type signing ?

I like McCarthy as a player and I said as much on the wigan thread last week but I dont think he is what we need right now - in my opinion we need a big bruiser/dirty c**t in the middle of the park to win possession and allow gifted footballers like arteta, wilshire and cazorla to shine whilst mccarthy would just bring more of the same as we already have

I am with Augie on Villa.

Whilst there is no certainty a new signing will do well, Villa's game is based more on experience, timing and technical ability than pace, so his age might even work in his favour?

A three year deal with first options on a further two years, would be good in my opinion.

Arsenal are planning bids for two midfielders, if the rumours are true. Victor Wanyama from Celtic has been watched by scouts from the Gunners, and was linked with a possible transfer in the summer. Celtic are keen to hold on to the talented and powerful young player, especially as they are through to the next round of the champions league against Juventus. The Scottish champions value Wanyama at well over £10 million.

Neil Lennon may have to prepare for a bid from Arsenal, though, after rumours began circulating that Arsenal were ready to make a move. Wanyama has previously spoken about a move to the Premier league and the Gunners need just that sort of player to add strength to the skill at the Emirates. It is just a rumour, and we are constantly linked with players.

The Mirror reports that James McCarthy from Wigan Athletic is the midfielder that Arsenal are ready to bid for. The 22-year old Ireland international is also wanted by Liverpool and Everton, apparently, but Wenger hopes to get him for £8 million. The Scottish born player recently signed a long term contract at Wigan, however, so Wigan would be under no pressure to sell.

Spot on Augie 8) 14m for a player of Villas class is cheap imo,who gives a fuck that hes 31  we could easily get 5yrs out of him.Hes a winner who scores goals, hes the finished article and hes world class.Think of the lift he would give us,fuck my boxers are getting tight at the thought  When you consider we got 15m off them for Thong in the summer :barscarf: it really is a no brainer.

jaysus people moaning about the cost of a player, ffs he would improve us the minute he played and surely the first team is the most important part of the club, far to many people think about money these days and not about the team :?

its looking like a definate goer for Villa, but i cant help thinking as awesome as he is it just has smacks of desperation written all over it.Wenker is trying to appease the unrest amongst us lot by making a big signing, thing is when you look at the rest of the squad where are the rest of the stars??we are that short of proper world class players that Villa will stand out like a sore thumb,he may as well join wigan, thats how ridiculous it will look, like a diamond in amongst a load of dog turd.when we signed Suker all those years ago we already had a great squad with world class palyers,Suker was a great player and a worthy squad player who fitted straight in with all the other stars at the time,we hardly noticed he was there in an much as as great as it was to have him at the same time we didnt need him,a bit like when Utd signed Henrik Larsson on loan, not a move to pull them out of the shit but to give a great side another option.we are just shit, devoid of talent,we need 3 world class signings at least to drag us back to where we belong,id rather see no signings and Wenker gone as if we do sign Villa dont expect to see it followed up with anything worthy of any note,a bit like when we wanted Maradona all those years ago, could you have imagined Maradona alongside Lee Chapman, farkin laughable :banghead:
