Michael Thomas

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Michael Thomas

Post by supergeorgegraham »

My brother in law used to play for QPR reserves in the 80s and played against Thomas, Merson, Rocastle etc etc. He said the best player he ever played against was Thomas.
He was thought of so highly by all the players at that time. I always find it hard to understand how Rocastle and Thomas only stared in our midfield for 5 years.

poor rocky had too many injuries but when he was fit was some player, as for Thomas well he never really seem to fit in to grahams style of football and wasn't an exceptional player by any means, he was good but paul davis was a better all rounder which graham seem to like and then kevin Richardson was signed which meant he played even less games.

Rocky was absolute class,he was a rare commodity in his time,a player blessed with natrual footballing talent,a great touch, balance, vision and could score goals,he'd have been one of the few players of that Arsenal era that could have walked into any of Wenkers teams.Thomas was a very good player but as mentioned Paul Davis was probably a better all rounder even though Thomas for me was the kind of player we really could have done with, someone with a bit of flair and could do something a bit differant.i think this is where the problem was,GG seemed obsessed with midfield work(cart)horses over talent,he prefered a player who would run around like a headless chicken for 90 minutes taking opposition scalps rather then a sublime technical player, hence the reason the Rocky/Thomas partnership was short lived. Also Rocky was a bit injury prone curtailing the duo. These days it seems that although Thomas will always be an Arsenal legend his heart is at Liverpool,he doesnt seem to have much love for Arsenal at all.Rocky was red and white till that sad day that he passed away.Rocky we still love you and always will :barscarf:

They were all good players, but played less than they should.

Rocky - knee injuries.

Paul Davis - fell out with Graham at times and got banished to the reserves.

Michael Thomas - I think he also had run-ins with Graham and so got dropped, but not 100% sure. He was a tough, ball winning box-to-box midfielder with good pass on him who could also play well in defence if needed, and started out his first team career in defence.

Michael Thomas a TRUE Arsenal legend. It was unreal the club he left us for was Liverpool! I guess that goal happened so early in his career that it was always going to be impossible to reach such heights regularly.

Rocastle, Merson, Thomas, Davis, the homegrown talent we used to produce back then was phenomenal.
