Re: Players who for whatever reason never made it
Injury has reduced certain players to lower levels than would have been expected by their early career promise.
Jeremy Aliadiere
Ryan Garry - Two broken legs!
Ian Selley - Two broken legs!
Ryan Smith
Paul Vaessen
Francis Jeffers

That's something from Wenger supporters that pisses me off above all else. It's like they forget that Arsenal have always given a lot of our youth players a fair shot. Can't credit GG for all of them, but think of the batch of Rocky, Merse, big Tone, Davies, Thomas and Quinn (maybe some wouldn't count him, but I rated him) was the best group we ever produced. Chippy, O'leary and Staplec**t. Charlie George and Ray Kennedy. We've always done it. It's like they genuinely think that the idea of giving young players a shot was a daring, exciting brand new innovation in football that St Arsene constructed in his genius brain. In fact look at the way I started this topic. Vaessen, a home grown player, (a Londoner too) brought on in the semi-final of a European competition.Offside wrote:That's Wenger "the great developer of youth" for youREB wrote:every arsenal reserve player for the last 5-6 years were talked up but fuck all of them playing in the pl these days.

Remember being really impressed with David Noble when watching him in the youths and reserves and thought he would go on to be a great player for us. Can't remember if he got an injury but he was released by the club and I think played lower league football.

Re: Players who for whatever reason never made it
We won the title in '91 with eight home grown players - Adams, O'Leary, Thomas, Davis, Rocastle, Campbell, Merson and Hillier. The '71 double winners had George and Kennedy, as you said, but also Rice, Radford, Storey, Kelly, Simpson, Sammels, Armstrong. Wenger can only dream of that sort of success with a group of home-grown players.Soul of mischief wrote:That's something from Wenger supporters that pisses me off above all else. Re: Players who for whatever reason never made it
Thought I'd throw Alex Manninger's name into the mix. When he guided us to the double in 1997/98, I really thought he was the next big thing, and would replace Seaman to become our number one for years. But the next season, he was really poor, and never showed any glimpses of what made him so great in the double year.
I've looked at Wiki, and he became a real journeyman (to say the least). After leaving us in 2002, he played for: Espanyol, Torino, Bologna, Siena, Red Bull Salzburg, Udinese, Juventus, and FC Augsburg (where he currently plays).

Most if not all of England's so called "world class" players who have constantly underperformed wearing the 3 lions and have won fuck all for nearly 50 years!!
Sounds a bit like us really!

You can look no further than some of the players out on loan
Joel Campbell Tricky Dicky Law spent a week trying to sign him not pulling up any trees out on loan doubt if he ever gets over here he will get any further than the league cup side.
Ditto Miyaichi three loans
Ditto Wellington
Some good calls.Fran Merida was being touted as player with a decent future went back to Spain & guess the rest is not history.

Forgot to add Pedro Bothelho player we loaned out to various clubs in Spain absolute nutcase off the field crashing cars, drinking fighting.
Manninger is a good call was absolutely brilliant in that 97/8 season when called on he really looked the part when called on.

Lupoli and Merida were both tipped for big things.

To be fair to Wenger, Brady etc. I think JET scuppered himself by thinking he had "Made It" before he had kicked a ball for the first team, at least that was my impression.storrmin571 wrote:JET - was a great hope. Shit at Cardiff now at Ipswich or some other hole of a team.
It is my fear for Frimpong too, though he can hopefully learn from his mate Wilshere's example and get his head down and avoid the off itch nonsense that was threatening to scupper Wilshere's top flight career two years ago.

That is what it comes down to JET was caught driving an expensive car he owned without a licence in his own head he had made it young & overpaid.QuartzGooner wrote:To be fair to Wenger, Brady etc. I think JET scuppered himself by thinking he had "Made It" before he had kicked a ball for the first team, at least that was my impression.storrmin571 wrote:JET - was a great hope. He was a beast of a player at a young age mainly because of his obvious physical advantage he could bully opponents not so easy as you move up poor work ethic & attitude.

If he had been good enough I am sure the club wouldn't minded if he was driving without a licence.Topside Northbank wrote:That is what it comes down to JET was caught driving an expensive car he owned without a licence in his own head he had made it young & overpaid.QuartzGooner wrote:To be fair to Wenger, Brady etc. I think JET scuppered himself by thinking he had "Made It" before he had kicked a ball for the first team, at least that was my impression.storrmin571 wrote:JET - was a great hope. I guess £1.1million isn't bad for a player who could be out of football few years later.

Re: Players who for whatever reason never made it
Some of it is undoubtedly down to attitude with JET but also he clearly just lacks ability. This will have been exacerbated by lack of dedication to improvement and development but even arrogant *word censored* like Bentley have managed to at least stay in an around PL (largely!) and at some point shown they might have some ability.
