Legends Statues

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Arsenal didn't exist pre wenger so all Statues will be post 1996 for a while longer at least .

Since I've supported them there are a few more legends I'd like to see there .

George Armstrong
Jon Radford
David O'Leary
Ian Wright
Liam Brady

There are many others who have been good but these played for us for a very long time even Brady, who left us too soon.
Theres a case for Simpson and Storey too but the club are unlikely to bother with the anything but the most recent past
although I do expect a Rocky one one day .
The Arsenalfication has been piss poor and typical of a club that cares not one jot about its supporters except when it can squeeze money out of them.
Tony Adams love him as I do is one funny fucker but I do know that one of the reasons he doesnt come back is his ever present wish to stay sober ,when there are events at the ground they often hit the Bar and TA cant be near one.
TA did turn up for Paddy Gallaghers funeral in Highbury New Park so to say he's not been near the place isn't true however he didn't attend the wake in the Bar afterwards for the same reasons .

Herd I think everyone remembers those two goals against Wigan in the League Cup in 2008/09 but still not sure it merits Jay Simpson getting a statue

I'm not against statues per se, though choosing who merits one is tricky.

Shortly after I first discovered this forum there was a 'best Arsenal team ever' poll, choosing players position by position. The list for best Right Midfielder didn't include George Armstrong. When I complained I was told to include him in 'others'. For me this highlights a real benefit of statues, because when in X years time a young lad is walking to the match he's going to ask his Dad, 'Who's that?' and the story he'll hear will keep the legends alive and George Armstrong etc will never be consigned to 'others'.

I like Herd's list. I guess we must be of a similiar vintage.

I would strongly support George Armstrong and Ian Wright. Statistically, O'Leary should be in there, but he turned into a bit of an arse.
Storey's spell at Her Madge's Pleasure will preclude him and I'm not sure that Radford is quite up there (though his ability is often overlooked).

Geordie is third in the most played games list, was an amazing player, never gave less than 100% and never caused a second's trouble. He continued to serve the club after he stopped playing.
Also, he wasn't very tall so might cost a bit less than the others.

Geordie and O'Leary i'd support.

Wrighty - legend yes, but replaced and surpassed by TH14. If you put wrighty in you have to put Cliff Bastin in....

Brady , no. I love him, he'll always be my favourite from that era - more than platini or cruyff or neskeens or zico.

but, he did only a small part of his great career with us - the rest was with Juve and sampdoria.

he is a world football legend, but not an Arsenal one sadly even though he is the reason i still wear Number 7 at five a side...

Wrighty deserves a statue regardless of whether he's subsequently been over-taken as our all-time leading scorer by TH. 8)

so does Bastin then Hlebby.

I saw the leaked photo of Dennis' statue.

its the leaping salmon one from the Newcastle game.

wrong choice.

no one will ever remember Dennis as an athlete - we will remember him as an Artist. they would have been better to have him doing a drag back or opening his foot up to curl one, or his classic volley stance.

they obviously never watched him play. complete twats.

If they were going to go for the one from that game I think there's a picture of him with his arms outstretched just after touching the ball as he starts to spin the other way. Still wouldn't be my first choice but far more iconic imo.

Fair enough and I wouldn't be opposed to Bastin having one as well, but one consideration would be that far more people are aware of and were/are actually alive when Wrighty was doing the business for us and thus his feats are much more embedded in our memories than Bastin's (or indeed anyone from that era), unfair as that may seem.

I do agree with the rest though. 8)

I used to love O'leary. One of my favourite players and I thought nothing would ever change that.
Fast forward to that dark depressing day at Elland Road in 1999 and him running around like a proper arsehole, well it left a bitter taste in my mouth that I've never been able to get over. Not saying he should have sent his team out to lose, but he didn't need to behave like such a wanker.

TH14 may have surpassed Wrighty's goal tally, but no-one's surpassed his effort, passion and exhuberance. He was a proper bloke who cared for and understood the fans and who clearly still loves the club. Definitely worth a statue.
