Barriecuda - tbh we don't really try and win anything mate! I'm not saying we lose games on purpose but insisting on selling our best players and not investing any money in the squad is tantamount to conceding that we cannot win the CL or PL.

We've not seen the LC as a priority until this year and have also regularly sacrificed the FA Cup by playing weaker teams in 4th/5th/6th rounds (including this year) - it's not through terrible misfortune or circumstances beyond our control that we're trophyless for 8 seasons.

Clash touched on this point earlier, but not only have we qualified for the last 15 years, but we've been well seeded these last however many seasons too. So basically that should all but guarantee us qualification from the group. So to only make two semi finals really is pathetic.

Bolton Wanderers end of 1995-96 season

how we celebrated the goal that took us to the UEFA cup...

thats what it was all about....knowing how important Europe was and no matter the competition we celebrated.
If we never qualify for the CL ever again so be it.....at least we had 16 attempts thats 15 more than our noisy scumbag neighbours..

Maybe Gazidis will try and do his usual trick and say "Man Utd would love to be in our position" bla bla bla that he tried when Man City were out of the champions league but went on to win the premiership.

I think it's a terrible record,1 final and 2 semi's in 16yrs the rest is a joke.I agree with Barriecuda and believe it's a financial thing not winning trophies  and the format of the C/L and it's qualification falls nicely into the hierarchy's plans so no need to push the boundaries just get 4th with avenge Joe's.

there's a few general points I agree with
but I have to agree with Herd - whining that about a top 8 in Europe record sounds a bit pathetic

a few points worth making
Offside wrote:had the CWC '94 back five
that let in LOADS of goals around that time, we came 12th FFS

Real Madrid not a top team?
clockender1 wrote:the ricketts made in 2004 by Wenger was also the first signs of his stubborness.
IMO not selling "the CWC '94 back five" like everyone expected, only signing players who hadn't played in the Prem and confronting BS media 'rumours' on the Highbury steps were his first signs of stubborness

We went out by a single goal last season - vanStaplecunt missed a sitter...
We're two goals down at the moment. Citeh and Chavs are out.
Who cares what top players we had. Can make lists of good players for every big club in Europe.
I love Ralph, hard as fek, but boo-hoo how did Lauren never win the CL... seriously?

Wenger has many many flaws, saying our CL record is terrible is a ridiculous exaggeration - compared to who?
Claiming we are "the whipping boys of europe" well...
how can I respond to that? Not sure,
presume it's some weird, insane hyperbole to illustrate a point method
No rational human can possibly think we are "the whipping boys of Europe"
Even if a great side (IMO currently the best in the world) resoundingly beats us to the quarters.

JD our European Cup record compared to say sp*rs is fantastic and also compared to say Lille or Shalke but having qualified for 16 straight years to have have never won it, only made 1 final and only made 2 semis in that time i would say it isnt a great record :?

Recently we've made it out of the group stage only to fall against the first good team we've faced, that isn't good enough either

Firstly I totally agree with you here Flash.

But forgive me because I know this is really pedantic ... but I keep reading how we've made it to 1 final and 2 semi finals. That makes it sound like there have been 3 seasons where we got to the latter stages, when its really only twice. Just saying 1 final and 1 semi should suffice I think because obviously to make the final you have to get to the semi. Its almost counting it twice.

Anyway as I said, this is me being very pedantic :)
