The "Irish" part is uncalled for.

ive been going to the arsenal since the 80s and I go to between 5-7 games a season. now consider the fact of flights,hotel,game tickets taxi to airport etc then I am spending roughly 300 plus quid a game plus spending money. so very expensive jolly up I can assure you,plenty on here from n5 moan about redaction but you pick up one from overseas and call us dickheads

Trying to get back to the initial point of this discussion...

A huge majority have selected safe standing as the biggest likely contributor to better atmosphere. I can't really argue with that. I would hope it would be an environment where people would be expected to contribute and sing (in some countries the main groups use young lads to actually go around pushing and shoving people in areas which are under their "control" where people are expected to sing - maybe this would be a bit too much for AFC though). Must keep reminding myself that a lot of these countries' people wish for the level of peace and civilised behaviour you get in England (the reputation of skinheads and reebok classics seems to have faded).

I feel confident that safe standing will eventually happen (and am grateful that redaction make such an effort on behalf of Arsenal supporters). With English football being under more scrutiny from a poor champions league season, the premier league would probably not want to risk TV revenues. Atmosphere is a big part of the TV experience. Improving it would help them. And we already know that commercial gain rules in this world of greed that we are in.

Anyway...

What can be done NOW to improve the atmosphere? Is there really no hope? Nothing is impossible, right?

I don't think we should get carried away with a rose tinted view of Highbury, it could be and often was one of the quietest grounds during the all seated era but the difference was the tightness of the supporters to the pitch and each other and a lot of season ticket holders together next to away fans, which is totally missing at the Grove. We have always had middle class support but it has grown out of proportion again in this all seated/sky era.....

I've always been into European football and always found the provincial teams to be much more vocal in their support ie. Athletico Madrid is a far better day out for atmosphere and a lively feeling than Real Madrid who attract the corporate and JCL's of Spain. They say at Barcelona the most noise you hear is when the supporters unwrap the tin foil on their 'Bocadillos' (basically their sandwiches) as half time, again Espanyol in their new stadium is a much better day out.

We have to accept that as the most successful London team in a brand new state of the art stadium we will attract tourists, corporate and general JCL's. The stadium design and fan position hasnt helped agreed and I think there is nothing that can be done now

Another thing is that Islington and North London in general has gentrified massively. We are a lot of these people's local club.

As an idea for improving atmosphere, what about suggesting a return of the schoolboy's enclosure (at cheaper prices). Having a group of 12-18 year olds together would surely lend itself to a decent block of noise coming from them.

What I don't understand is, is that appearing to be a 'caring' club is surely good for brand image. I think the general consensus about football is that it's moved too far from its roots. The first club that attempts to show they're trying to take the game back to the people is going to get a lot of positive PR. This is very cynical, but can then be used to market the club as the 'people's club' or the 'true Londoner's club' or something equally corny. Even if it is a purely cynical step if it helps make tickets cheaper I would not give a ****. Anyone here know anything about marketing etc. I have no idea about it, it's just an idea I had.

A decent team, not a bunch of annual bottlers would give the crowd a lift, some may even stay till the final whistle to see the result


Basically the board have got what they wanted - hardly any "old school" fans as they have been priced out / forced out through over zealous stewarding and replaced by zombiefied wengerites who will spend shitloads in the club shop and eat overpriced "food" from the official outlets

Be careful what you wish for is what we are told when saying Wenger Out, well it works both ways.

All good suggestions. Unfortunately not one will ever be implimented, for the following reasons;

1) FA will never allow this because they are totally out of touch with the fans and do not understand safe standing. They only see rowdy hooligans, not fans.

2) Choice of Shit anthems was chosen by club. Club run by people out of touch with football fans. Bit like your elderly uncle hearing you like Heavy Metal and buying you a One Direction album for Xmas.

3) Many of our stewards are scum fans. This has to be eradicated but won't be. Also, the club want wanky stewards to stop loud fans upsetting JCL's and ruining the day out at the "Footer" for corporates and families.

4) Greed is the new by-word for Boards in modern football. Gone are the days of running a club for love of club and operating at a small loss or breaking even. Now it's all about the money. Greedy wig wearing bastards and lying smarmy CEO's are all the rage y'know.

5) We are always going to have a shit corporate-named stadium because greed is everything. Fuck history, fuck tradition - sell that shit and get the bling in. Still, could be worse - imagine fronting up to the McDonald's Stadium or the Tampax Bowl?

There is no atmosphere in most grounds now unless it is a big game, i think its a lost cause trying to get any atmosphere inside the Emirates
