usual thread starter… it’s odd, we all think the squad needs strengthening, and yet how would we feel if the team actually managed to pull off the Champions League? I’ve been thinking about that this morning and although I’m the first to say we don’t have strength in depth, in a funny sort of way, I think this season has shown that arsenal seem to be more suited to the demands of European competition than the Prem. In terms of generally playing better against teams that are too good to just plot up in their own half. Will be interesting to see what happens with euro refs taking charge of Liverpool and arsenal. I am not sure those ties will be like domestic games at all. Much more cautious. I am not saying we are going to win the CL, just that I haven’t given up. Need a bit of luck though, that’s fair to say. Can we get past Liverpool and Chavski to make Moscow? Have Fenerbahce got any chance of eliminating the Chavs?
This season has not been a failure (28/3)

No denying
I don't think that any honest gooner or even Wenger for that matter can deny the fact that we lack the strength in depth.
We need cover in wide areas and also in attack. Alberto Gilardino looks like an interesting prospect cuz he is also looking to move....
Our first 11:
Sagna Gallas Toure Clichy
Hleb Fab4 Flamini Rosicknote
RVP Adebayor
are as good as any of the big four...infact heres our stats against the top half of the premierleague clubs:
played 15
won 9
drawn 5
lost 1
we are ranked 1 according to these stats....but with the lesser teams...we have struggled, that is because we have faced a lot of teams from the bottom half in recent weeks and our first team players have been injured or out of form during this period....this is where the Man united and Chelsea are stronger than us....they grind out results even when they have off days.......at the begining of this season, even we used to grind out results when we didn't play particularly well (Wigan at home, Sunderland at home and West Ham at home) this was because we didn't have many injury problems at that time......
I hope Wenger buys some cover for these areas...it'll be interesting to see how the players perform away at Bolton tomorrow and I hope to see Toure at Right back not Eboue or Hoyte

Firstly, its too soon to say whether the season is a failure or not..we are still in the Champions League you know!
However, 3rd in the league with 7 games remaining, and utterly humiliated in the domestic cups, with 5-1 & 4-0 loses against our bitterest of rivals, Spurs & ManU.
- would you have accepted that at the start of the season? er.....no.
We have definately improved on last season, but the manner in which we've surrendered our 5 point lead, and turned it into a 6 point defecit, in the space of 5 games, is quite amazing.
- Unfortunately, they choked. Yes, they're young..but to be honest, I thought they were made of stronger stuff than that.
Bolton will be tough, but its all about the Liverpool showdown now. I really hope they can salvage something from this season, as I believe the players deserve it. Considering the lack of depth in our squad, and the injuries we've been blighted with; the players have done rather well considering.
- one just wonders what might have been if Wenger had loosened the purse strings in August or January. I'm sure he's kicking himself about it now. If not...he should be!
Great team; no depth.

I have said it before on other posts, but think we have to view seasons 2005 - 2006 until 2009 - 2010 as part of a bigger picture.
One where the boss did what he could under financial restraints, whilst wealthy foreign owners bought up rivals and gave them more money than they otherwise woudl have had..
One where the club built and moved into a new ground.
This took some money away from being spent on the team.
During this time we focussed on youth and coaching them in technique.
In a coupe of seasons more money is available for players as money comes in from the sale of Highbury property.
In terms of the above, we have done well this season.
