WHAT'S GREATEST SUMMER SIGNING PRIORITY?
Spurs at home springs to mind to counter that argument. If we'd have gone 1 - 2 down we would not have won it !Magic Hat wrote:Keepers make mistakes, keepers have horror shows. I do agree our defence has been bad of late though
Almunia is unfairly under-rated by some Arsenal fans and most of the hacks in the media.

As many said, I'd like a goalkeeper. I think we would be able to get Buffon for around 20 million. There is no point having a potentially world-class side with an average keeper. Buffon is experienced, good age for a goalkeeper and simply world-class. The team starts with a goalkeeper so that's why I want one.
My second priority would be a left-footed left-winger. We haven't a single player who has a left foot and can play on the left wing. Whether they are bad or not, at least we have some on the right wing. We should have signed Bale in the summer, he is a Gooner and would have cost the same as Theo, who he is friends with. Bale would also be able to step into the left-back position if Clichy was unavailable. So it was a win-win situation. Oh, and did I mention that he is 18! Wenger's main interest when he wants to buy someone

man u at home spring to mind as well as sunderland where he was slow getting down to the ball,,Rob wrote:rebel gooner wrote:he saved a penalty wow![]()
can think of at least 6 games and goals that he left in that he should have done better
And they are ....?
how many times has he been beaten on his near post

Plus Middlesbrough away (defeat) and Birmingham away (draw).rebel gooner wrote:man u at home spring to mind as well as sunderland where he was slow getting down to the ball,,Rob wrote:rebel gooner wrote:he saved a penalty wow![]()

how many times has he been beaten on his near postand even against chelsea last week he was slow to react to drogbas second and has weak wrists not strong enough to push the ball away,, cant come for cross's and generally is not good enough to be number one keeper for a top club
I don't think I underrate Almunia: he's a good squad player, can provide good back-up and is a committed team player. He's done well in plenty of games. But he just doesn't have the ability of Cech, Buffon, Toldo, Casillas, Caniazares, Friedel, Reina, Frey, van der Sar, Coupet or James. Or Jens Lehmann, even now. He just isn't good enough (his reactions being significantly slower than top goalkeepers') and his mistakes have cost us points in at least 4 games this season.
It isn't just us that feel he isn't top class - when was Almunia even considered for inclusion in the Spanish squad? Never as far as I know.
It's not going to happen but we should have a better keeper than Almunia as first choice.

We can spend all day on this but there's no way that he was at fault for the draw with the Mancs. The first goal deflects off Gallas the second was Walcott not tracking Evra and ball watching.
There's no way he was to blame for the Middlesborough defeat either.
And any error he has made this season has been far from obvious and nothing like as gross as Jens errors at home to Fulham or away to Blackburn.
Of those keepers sited only Cech and Buffon are clearly better. Neither are likely to come here.
