Under Rated or Over Rated? - Discuss Arsenal Legends
Re: Underated Legends
Wondering whether to merge this with the overrated thread. Same players being talked about.

Kanu underated? He was voted the 13th greatest Arsenal player ever.I would say that is grossly overated.Good player but better than McLintock Armstrong Radford Rocastle O'Leary and Smudger1989 wrote:Kanu & Overmars.

Re: Under Rated or Over Rated? - Discuss Arsenal Legends
Think the word gets bandied around because a player will score a few crucial goals or put in some really memorable virtuoso performances.
Kanu and Overmars fall firmly in this category for me. I would put the romford Pele in there as well. RP was brilliant for us and he always worked hard and liked to put a foot in now and then. As fans we all love that and of course there is his "It's only Ray Parlour" against the chavs .
Kanu's magnificent hat trick against the chavs. Overmas did a lot for us in 98 and 99 but for me his copy will always be blottted by the way he left. But discounting that he was not a Legend. The other 2 for me were and always will be loved but they are not legends. Don't think they were overrated either, just not Legends.
Freddie and Bobby Pires were not overrated. For me they will always be Legends. They got us the the double in my favourite season as a gooner 2001/2002. Too much cr*p and booze was going on in my life to fully apprceiate 03/04 but 01/02 was pure joy.

Re: Over Rated "Legends" Who's yours?
Past his sell by date when he came to us, but still scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win against West Ham early on in my "career"...!littlefire wrote:Alan Ball.
Good call. Not sure why he didn't earn more plaudits at the time - and is often forgotten since - but saved our arses on many occasions.donaldo wrote:Jimmy Rimmer
Its nearly a 100 years since we played in a lower division and that record only stands because of him.Without him we would have been relegated in 75 and 76

he was only here for one season and didn't really settle, fine player but didn't set the world alight after he left either so strange choice I feel.MK Gould wrote:Underrated = Vladimir Petrovic....
Re: Under Rated or Over Rated? - Discuss Arsenal Legends
Mmmmm there seems to be a lot of players mentioned for one or two great moments, not consistent season after season performances! There aren't many legends in Wenger's reign and he inherited some of them!
In defence we've had a few.....Seaman is the best keeper we've had in donkeys years by a million miles, legend? Well maybe he is close. Lehmann? don't make me laugh, I loved his enthusiasm but he was an enormous liability and cost us many points.
The back 5.....well for me three are legends, Adams, Dixon and Winterburn. Bouldy doesn't quite make it because he was in and out a bit with Keown.
In midfield, Paddy, Bobby P and Freddie are all total legends. Fabregas was getting there, he carried us for years in midfield and had to play with some dire teammates. Up front, Wrighty, Bergkamp and Henry are legends to a man.
Go back a bit further and Paul Davis deserves a special mention, really talented, Arsenal through and through and vastly underrated. Liam Brady was also a total legend.
In the current squad you have to sift through a pile of mediocrity to find one or two possibilities, Jack and Santi are the only two who are likely to get anywhere near legend status and I seriously doubt either will be around long enough to get there.

Paul Mariner, Tony Woodcock, Steve Williams, Michael Thomas - Over rated
Brian Talbot, Viv Anderson, Limpar, Keown, Gilberto - under rated
As for the Gerard debate absolute word class. He's carried that Liverpool team for 8 years and I hate to say this he's won more trophies in a poor Liverpool team in the last 8 years than we have, mainly because he's the heartbeat of that club. Who have we got???? That's right they've all been sold/left out frustration.

is this a joke?TeeCee wrote:There aren't many legends in Wenger's reign and he inherited some of them!
the back four have GG to thank for starting their careers and Wenger for extending them
and Bould is a guaranteed 100% straight legend IMO
Parma in Copenhagen might be the best performance I've ever seen
vast majority of Bergkamp's Arsenal career was under Wenger,
as were Parlour's best performances
but even with those discounted 'not many' is insane -
three legends would be a lot FFS
and Vieira, Henry, Pires, Campbell are beyond dispute
there are big arguments for Freddy, Petit, Overmars, Ralph, Fabregas, Gilberto
Ca$hley is a dreadful prick but our best youth product in ages
vanStaplecunt is a lying judas bitch but scored over 100

Gervinho - pure legend.
Single handedly got us to the Champions League above both THFC & CFC this season.

Re: Under Rated or Over Rated? - Discuss Arsenal Legends
Accepted - but given that he played for us 30 years ago and I still remember him as being an exceptional talent means that he must have had something. In truth, I think it was one particular game that marked him out. I'll say it was a 4-1 win at West Ham...but someone will probably correct me, that it was a 2-2 draw with WatfordREB wrote:he was only here for one season and didn't really settle, fine player but didn't set the world alight after he left either so strange choice I feel.MK Gould wrote:Underrated = Vladimir Petrovic....

Re: Underated Legends
Amazing that Kanu made it that high on the list. To be honest his talent should have earned him a top 10 place but his actual achievement makes him lucky to be top 50. In the 98/99 season he produced some amazing stuff. I was there at Boro when he scored that cheeky flick and some of the other stuff he produced like at the Lane and against La Coruna was out of the top drawer.....but he became a rank lazy bastard at times and was absolutely infuriating by the time he left us where every single touch of the ball had to be off the outside of the boot or backheeled.
