It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.
First female prime minister turned out to be one of the few with any bollocks! Identified what she thought was wrong with the country and did something about it. The current generation of greasy salesmen who make policy on the hoof and are concerned only with how a policy will "play" in the media will barely raise tumbleweed when they pass. If you haven't pissed off a large chunk of people then you've not changed anything.
Most of what you said could equally have been said about Adolf Hitler...
She had no compassion and devasted the lives of millions. No surprise that the term "thatcherite" is used by all as a negative!
Apart of course from the fact after getting elected he burned down the parliment building and banned all opposition giving himself free reign and going on to commit atrocities. What people don't like is she was voted in, the voting public liked her
flash gunner wrote:Falklands war MK? I'd say thats one of the few things she actually did well
It was her policies that caused the Falklands war...!!
And why was she so willing to sacrifice so many lives in defence of a small group of farmers on the other side of the world while at the same time destroying whole communities in our own back yard...

Oh dear.. I don't think that first "point" deserves acknowledgment so I wont bother.
And yes, the term thatcherite is used universally negatively if you only ever visit twitter and the guardian comment pages..
Very sad to see such bitter, nasty, poisonous posts about someone passing away. Frankly says more about the people making the comments than it does about her. She will be remembered as one of the great political figures in British history. A great woman. May she rest in peace.

For the benefit of whom, may I ask?
Swathes of working and lower-middle class people who could now aspire to own their own homes and get on in life. The entire country who were fed up with being bullied and held to ransom by the unions. The two decades of economic prosperity which Labour and the yanks managed to screw up spectacularly.
Sorry mate, I cannot agree with all of that. The economic prosperity didn't apply to swathes who lost their jobs up north and those who couldn't afford to buy their home either.
She has a rap sheet as long as my arm. She might have restored some temporary pride in the British, but at what cost?

Haven't done history in a while but wasn't Hitler voted in.... and didn't he just identify what was wrong with his country & do something about it!

Yeah he did get elected and then burned down the Reichstag building blaming the communists and therefore banned all other political parties, allowing him (with the help of his brown shirted thugs) to do whatever he wanted without recrimination. No comparisons really

She was as far right as you can get without straying into fascist territory so to speak. I was saving my party for the day Wenger goes but this will have to do for now.

Exactly. May have been 30 years ago but she won 3 general elections so clearly she wasn't anywhere near as unpopular as people suggest. People may try and write this off by saying that she conned people when in power or whatever but truth is plenty of people supported Thatcher and plenty of very well-educated and balanced people still think she did many great things - but many refrain from airing this view because they'll get bombarded and labelled all sorts of things.
I'm not levelling accusations at anybody on here but I have met tens of people who insist that Thatcher is an evil woman and a terrible politician, but couldn't actually substantiate this with a single policy and in fact have no clue about her. In fact, many of these people would also complain about our luxurious welfare system and the inefficiency of the public sector in the same breath without thinking twice.
And what comparisons could possibly be drawn between a politician who made largely unpopular but clearly rational and genuine socio-economic reforms and a leader who conned, cheated and physically bullied his way into power, commissioned widespread violence, intimidation and murder, introduced and enthusiastically enforced racist laws before bringing a continent to its knees, being responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of people by virtue of starting a world war and also tens of millions more in a despicable programme of genocide etc?

From what I can remember he was appointed chancellor as a junior member of a split coalition parliament. The Nazi vote was on the rise but wasn't strong enough for him to form a government on his own (nor do I think it was the largest single party, although I'd need to double check that). Some old conservative types put him in there thinking they could control him and were wrong. After that he dismantled German democracy entirely, as flash says.
Edit: the Nazi party was the largest single party having just checked, but did not get a parliamentary majority.
But anyway, that is vastly off topic.
For me the main mistake made in her time in office was signing the Single European Act and allowing herself to be bullied by the Europhiles.
