Arsenal have reacted to criticism about their ticket prices by bringing in a £10 teenagers-only section for next season.
There will be between 800 and 1,000 seats in the section, which will not apply for Category A games. Although the club will lose almost £400,000 per season because of the initiative, they will hope to attract a new generation of fans.

The plan was proposed by members of the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust (AST) and Arsenal Independent Supporters’ Association (AISA) during discussions with club officials.

The Gunners have taken the brunt of public frustration over the increasing cost of attending football, with their game against Chelsea in September — for which prices started at £62 — labelled as the most expensive in Premier League history. Manchester City returned 900 tickets, also priced at £62 each.

There have also been numerous occasions when the Emirates has seemed less than full, with the club now announcing ‘tickets sold’ rather than the attendance on matchdays.

Last year the club announced a new pricing structure with three categories: A (starting at £62), B (£35.50) and C (£25.50). Tuesday’s match against Everton was Category B, so the club would have given up £25,500 if 1,000 teenagers had been in place.

Of the 19 home League games at Emirates Stadium this season, five were labelled Category A, eight were B level and six were C, so the club would have given up £297,000 had the scheme been operating.

There have also been three Champions League Group games and an FA Cup tie against Swansea — all Category B — taking the total lost revenue to £399,000 were the scheme in place in full this season.

Arsenal, who have frozen prices for next season, have long had a cheaper pricing structure for the Capital One Cup, with tickets starting at £10, and this is almost certain to continue.

The club have not had a section for youngsters since leaving Highbury, where the ‘Junior Gunners’ section was located in the lower West Stand.

Other Premier League clubs have specific deals for youngsters, with Everton offering a £149 season-ticket for Under-16s, for example, while West Ham and Fulham offer ‘kids for a quid’ deals at some matches.

But Arsenal are thought to be the first of the League’s big guns to introduce such a scheme.

If they are actually losing £400k per season (really????) I think the vast majority would agree that they should, instead of this, make each season ticket roughly £100 cheaper (think we have just over 40,000 ST holders so would work itself out). Despite still being extortionate at least it would help a bit and be a token thank you to fans who they have mugged off every season with these prices and false promises and who have undoubtedly paid well over the odds. And it would be an acknowledgement that we've underperformed.

But of course the club doesn't think we've underperformed at all and is more interested in enticing youngsters in in the hope they'll be willing to part with vast amounts of money a decade or whatever down the line than a gesture to the fans who have been doing so for years.

That's if there's actually any substance to this story at all!

I think the scheme is a good idea.
We had something similar at Highbury (Cannon Club?) which kicked after one was too old for Junior Gunners.
For people my age going to games was a weekly thing as a teenager, for today's generation there is little chance they can afford to go weekly.

They'll make the money back somehow. Can't see them hiding it in the price of a programme, more likely they'll just steal it from your pocket as you go through the turnstile.

As someone who used to stand in the Schoolboys Enclosure with a few mates in the early 70's I support any move to get young teenagers back into watching football .

Let's hope like as been mentioned already they don't try to get the money back from the rest of season ticket holders one way or another.

400k is nothing in perspective and if teenagers go for the cheaper tickets then a significant amount of them will go on to purchase a full cost season ticket in due course. 800-1000 tickets for certain games it seems. over a season it won't of course be always the same teenagers that get the tickets so a few thousand of them perhaps all told.

A relatively small percentage of the ones who attend going on to buy a full price season ticket will more than make up for the effectively trifling 400k loss.

A loss leader I believe the shopkeepers out there will tell us.
