Shearer maybe a useless pundit and a bellend but I think he's right. We are getting away with shit performances from our midfield and frontmen because our crap defence are actually stepping up to the mark........cue defensive collapse to the mancs.

Our only hope now is that Giroud's red is not overturned and our most clinical striker gets a look in. How the f**k is Walnutt ahead of the Ox with Theo's recent average displays!!

Arsenal are the second highest scorers in the league. We've scored more goals at home than any other team in the league!

Yep and just think what we could do with a proper centre forward (disagree regarding bent though). Imagine if we had one of the best centre forwards in world football, like that dutch bloke at the mancs. If we had him we'd win the league I reckon..

Yes, I didn't actually hear him say it as I turn off when I see him on the T.V. but it's widely reported in the press and on this thread that he said it yet again! Handbrake wanker!!

If you're just going to talk about goalscoring then look at Bent's last 4 seasons or so - his strike rate is miles better than Giroud's despite playing for relegation-threatened clubs. Not saying for a minute we should have signed him but don't defend Giroud because he scores a few goals then slag off Bent.

I'm sick of people saying it's unfair to compare him to van Persie, Henry and even Wright. Yes, he was never going to be as good as those, and that might not be his fault, but when people are trying to justify his place in the team and the squad then it makes perfect sense to compare him to our lead strikers of the past two decades.

And 11 goals in 33 games as the striker of a team playing 4-5-1 (therefore less creative responsibility on him) isn't good enough either imo, first season or not. Despite often being benched or injured and being generally shit since he got his new contract, Feo has managed to net 11 times in the league. To be joint-14th top scorer having played nearly every game for a team in 3rd position is not a good return, and his paltry 4 assists hardly provide good background reading.

The stats that he's been defended on are really not that good.
It wasn't my intention to open a full debate on Darren Bent but I'd be surprised if he has scored more than Giroud in the last 3 or 4 years mate. I actually don't disagree that Giroud has been pretty poor, I was just saying that certain fans wanted far worse players.
he has.nt
bent has scored 64 goals in the last 4 seasons
giroud has 80

we must have the most un- feared strike force in the country,id be happy playing against any of our front men knowing how blunt we are.when you see defoe come off the bench today to score a belter it kind of rubs salt into the wounds.id give my right arm for defoe right now, thats how far we have slipped. As for Bent id take him right now too,at least has some ability,my god remember when we had Henry :(

Why the fuck would I care how many goals he scored for Tours in Ligue 2 in 2009/10??? We're talking big boy football, not Sunday league!

I was talking about Giroud's goalscoring stats for this season seeing as it's often trotted out that they're quite good for a first season in England and the poster I was replying to saw fit to use Bent as an unfavourable comparison. Calculator out to avoid another maths error like the cheap tickets thread

Giroud has averaged a goal every 211 minutes in the Premier League.
Bent over the last 4 seasons has scored a goal every 175 minutes in the Premier League.

This is despite the fact that Bent has played for relegation fodder and also been used sparingly this year. Giroud, by comparison, has been the main/sole striker for a team that has managed 65 goals and currently sits in 3rd position so it wouldn't be at all unreasonable to expect far healthier goalscoring stats.

Not saying that it necessarily proves anything beyond Bent having a far better PL strike rate over the last few years than Giroud has this season. But maybe people should think a bit harder before offering the unfounded defence that Giroud has scored a reasonable number of goals in his first PL season and going on to slag off Darren Bent as a far worse alternative...

ok so we've had recommended buys of Darren Bent and Andy Caroll mooted here.

This is crazy, just because our strikers are poor doesn't mean we should just hoover up any old rubbish to prove a point that some shite player is better than what we have.

Buying players like bent isn't progress its regression or at the very least standing still and spinning, pointlessly into oblivion.

I hear Luis Saurez would bite our arms off if given the chance to play for the Arsenal!

I would buy Huntelaar....not a fan's favorite, but a goal scorer none the less. Apparently not a good friend of Judas van Pissy and might want to prove a point at The Arsenal too. :barscarf:

Not gonna happen though :(

I like huntelaar as a striker but I really really would like a proper striker (that rules out wally walnut btw) with pace - rvp, giroud, bendtner all lack the pace needed for this AFC team
