Barnets last game at Underhill

Really sad day today, back in the day I used to go to barnet home games one week arsenal the next. It used to cost pennies to go back then, and Barnet being the first semi/professional team I went to support live (even before arsenal).

Have many fond memories like when it kicked off vs lincoln city just after they got promoted. Group of Lincoln fans walked round the back of the west bank trying to intimidate the home fans, walked round the corner and bumped into 10 lads from the local estate, 30 of them took a total pasting.

Another time was when Barnet played Enfield on the same day as Arsenal vs Spuds(1989 I think). Lunchtime ko at underhill the bees win 1-0 courtesy of a screamer from dave sansom (kennys bro) then off to highbury to see us spank the spuds 2-0 cant remember who scored the first but pretty sure mickey thomas scored the second. Those where the good old days.

In 20 years who will remember the prawn sandwich they ate, the goals they missed because they left 15 minutes before the end, what seat they were in, what songs were sung ? That great text they sent on their I-phone during the match ?

Sure is, I guess 30 years ago the arsenal fanbase was much more concentrated than it is today, hence the lack of responses to the original post. I don't see how a yank gooner would get what I am going on about. Sad.

Surprised they're moving out of the borough, and not to Allianz Park (Copthall) which Saracens recently moved into

From Central London, The Hive is easier to access by tube (3 minutes from nearest tube) than the new Saracens ground, which is about 25 minutes walk from the nearest tube and about 35 minutes walk from the nearest national rail station.

Though the Hive is two buses from Barnet and not at all easy to get to by tube from Barnet.

If only the original tube plans had been finished!

And The Hive is a stunning football complex. The facilities are fucking amazing. For a team close to dropping out of the football league it'd be a bit like me being given Tiger Woods golf clubs to hack my way round Haste Hill golf course.

Yes but Barnet is in North London, not North West. Sorry the club has no links to edgware and geographically it seems strange that a club called barnet now doesn't play in barnet.

The solution would have been to build a new complex in the park behind the existing stadium. Would you seriously been happy if arsenal had moved to wembley?

oh i don,t know mate
memorys are a hardy old thing
we may not have put a trophy in the cabinet at the emirates yet
but games like the 1 nil win v chelsea in the 07/08 season will live long in the memory
there were plenty of early leavers at highbury as well
some season ticket holders you could set your watch by regardless of the state of the game
i can,t deny it has changed but it aint all bad
i would much rather sit in my seat and be able to watch the game rather than standing on tiptoes and catching the occasional glimpse of the players at places like plough lane
never stopped me singing and shouting either sitting down
might talk out my arse sometimes but not mastered singing out of it

Yeah it was great at the time (although I preferred the win against Spurs the following week because we played fucking shit for most of the game) but doesn't stand out for me. Just another reminder of what could/should have been that season and what a turning point it was.

it depends if you think games only carry intrinsic value if you go on to win said competition?
i agree entirely that the overiding feeling is that we should have won the league and seen out that champs league tie at anfield that season and it sticks in the craw but i as much as i love winning trophys and believe it what our business in football should be this was a nostalgic look at a bygone age had anfield 89 not happened would the gentlemans memory of beating spurs that day still not carried merit?
our nadir was the 75/76 season but i still have fond memorys of john radfords last min winner at highbury v liverpool

I wouldn't put it in those terms myself but I don't think you can (or would) deny that games will be treasured a lot more if they ultimately count for something. That Chelsea game may still bring a half-smile when I think about Cech flapping at thin air or Fabregas scything down Cole at the death but I don't really see any context that make me view it with glee beyond the normal happiness of beating those wankers.

I certainly look back with a lot more fondness and pride at 1-0 wins at Old Trafford in 98 and 02, even though our side in 06 that won there was far inferior and it was a far more surprising result.

Did you know that you could spit from The Hive and it would land in the London Borough of Barnet? It literally sits a few hundred meters from the borough boundary to Harrow.

Wouldn't give a fuck if Arsenal moved into a dome built on the moon. We came from Woolwich over 100 years ago. Shit happens, things move. Perhaps if England as a footballing nation had embraced the new changes that have come in at youth level 20 years ago we'd have been spared the clogging, also ran, failure after failure we've become used to.

Not saying anybody would be happy to move away from N5 and it's probably a somewhat bigger deal than changing kit colour but I don't see too many Cardiff fans complaining this week about playing in red...

Just like we wouldn't have had many people complaining about the Emirates had it actually allowed us to do as we were led to believe.
