Wilshere As A Holding Midfielder??

Post by Arsenal Till I Die »

I may be on my own here but would anyone else like to see Jack play in the holding role within the midfield? I mean the boy is a basic hard tackling, big bollocked bastard which we have been crying out for since we lost Gilberto/Viera and personally I wouuld rather having him situated deep within midfield battles rather than perhaps trying to bomb forward and create which to be honest I don't think he's THAT great at.

Arteta is slowly losing it I feel and Ramsey isn't good enough so I persoanly think it'd be worth a try.

not for me, too slow, too small and will get caught in possession too many times, when he tries to duck under some
6ft + opponents armpit.

We had a chap on trial called Yaya Toure, who Wenger deemed not good enough :?

A holding midfielder? Hold on a sec......it will come to me in a minute.....yep.....I'm slowly beginning to recall what one of those is now......errrm......nearly there........yep, got it. We had 3 of them in 2008/09, let them all go, promoted Song who we then sold and then just didn't bother after that

That's not true though, is it :?

There's enough ammunition out there without inventing new reasons to have a pop at Wenger.

Yaya couldn't get a work permit!!

Wilshire wont be at the club in 2 years time if he says fit.The only reason he aint going this summer is his injury record. He's our only sellable asset.Wenger thinks Diaby is the DM anyway :banghead:

Whilst I think Wilshere is not naturally a holding midfielder (Gilberto being the very embodiment of that role, intercept passes, hold the ball, play a safe pass to a team mate), I much prefer Wilshere to play deep midfield than the number 10 role off the striker.

Wilshere is a creative midfielder, who can also get stuck in.

Cazorla and Rosicky are at their best in the number 10 role, they are creative but less good at the tackling.

So for next season my wish would be Cazorla first choice number 10, Wilshere first choice deep midfield with a new ball winning midfielder next to him.
Perhaps Wanyama from Celtic?

My second choice midfield would be Rosicky number 10, Arteta and Ramsey deep, and I would hope to see Coquelin and Yennaris give their all to challenge for both deep lying places, because both of them can tackle and play a decent pass.
If Rosicky was out then move Arteta to the number 10 role.

I think Wilshere is better playing deep and will naturally take over from Arteta as long as it's ALONGSIDE A PROPER DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER PLEASE ARSENE!!! :banghead:

EDIT: Quartz puts it far better than me in his post above /\ 8)

He is not a holding midfielder, neither is Rambo or Arteta.

We have an abundance of players who can all play exactly the same position of being able to either tackle and drive the game or collect the ball off a proper holding midfielder and drive the game forward.

Jack,Rambo,Arteta even one game wonder Abou all do exactly the same thing. Our last possibility from within the club of a proper midfield general was Ping pong but he fell short.

We need a proper one not a make shift one.

Parker is a crap beyond the half way line but v.good at the holding role. All the players we use in these roles are average tacklers(i.e free kicks and yellow cards waiting to happen) or forget their roles and go bombing forward leavig the defence with no cover whatsoever.

Square pegs in square holes please. Jack/Arteta/Rambo next to a proper holding midfielder.

g88ner and Quartz beat me to it. :D

I'll solve all this deep lying midfielder, holding man bollocks right now.

We play two up front.

Not against him playing deeper but in a midfield of 5 all I want the holding midfielder to do is do his job defensively. I don't want him maurading forward, there's two other players for that. I don't think Jack is that player and I don't think wed get the most out of him there.

Do agree that Arteta is too slow and not quite intuitive enough in the role though, and he'll only get worse as he gets older.

Arteta is the best player we have in this position by a mile still. Not sure where all this 'he's losing it' stuff is coming from. Since he played there we have improved defensively beyond belief, unlike when Mong was playing there trying to flick his Hollywood passes off the outside of the boot every 5 mins

Not saying we shouldn't buy a player there because we should, but I still think Arteta has been a fantastic signing and one of our most consistent players for the past 2 seasons

And we'd get more mileage from Arteta by playing him there as and when warranted.

Like for example, playing at home when you don't need a mother fucker lying deep all game, and instead you play another forward.

Arteta is a smart footballer with 3 years left at the top-ish end of the league.

We'll get 1 out of him. Thanks to your friend and mine, Mr Potato.
