THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Arsenal are sixth in UEFA’s co-efficients and they are also behind Real Madrid, Barcelona, United, Bayern Munich and Chelsea in Deloitte’s European money league.

For a club of Arsenal’s size they should be winning trophies. Since the club last won the FA Cup in 2005, Real Madrid have won three league titles and the Copa del Rey; Barcelona have won five La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey twice and the Champions League three times.

United have won five Premier League titles and the Champions League; Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga four times and the Champions League; Chelsea have won two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

BUT! Arsenal is the only team who has won the virtuel trophy consistently in a row! None of the clubs above mentioned have ever achieved that  !

Reckon it's time we organised another march to show our undying support for Mr. Wenker, replete with 'I luv AW' t-shirts.

His contract's up soon and who the hell else could possibly manage Arsenal? It simply doesn't bear thinking about.......

Arsene Wenger in 1998:

"At some clubs success is accidental; at Arsenal it is compulsory."

I'm unsure of Wenger's ability in the 'big money spending' realm, just a thought - maybe he is too
If he thinks his biggest strength lies elsewhere - tries one more time to build a team
and doesn't quite make it, the next manager has even more to spend...

Just a quick question.....when did the clock start on trying to build one more team ? Just trying to find out cos I sure as hell wont accept that this failed project is only just starting in the last 2 years - the clock has long since run out on that one last team :x

Nice theory JD but I think his recent transfer business showed that he has gone from signing promising kids (Oxo excepted) to a scattergun, sign experienced players vibe - remember the influx after the 8-2 humilation?

Personally, I wouldn't allow him to spend big, because I think you're right in that he doesn't feel comfortable spending at market rate (a big problem) and he is also afraid of getting burnt (Reyes, Arshavin).

In the end though, the money is the club's, not his, and if he's not prepared to spend it he should do the decent thing and move on and allow us to recruit somebody who will.

I think he is still full of self-belief...
successful people often tread the line between secure self confidence and arrogant self-delusion
hope he's proven right - I still expect us to make a few significant signings
if we don't it could affect our confidence,
after Gazidis, Wilshere, Arteta and Sagna's statements - big transfers are obviously expected

I'd take an '02 type summer - loads of signings but only one making a significant impact
the rest just providing competition for existing players who then step up

I think this is the main problem we have, the people you mention in your post have all nailed their colours to the mast and big signings are expected. Fans are understandably becoming restless as we see the world and his wife getting their business done whilst our only signing is a promising kid who was on the verge of retirement.

After all the noises made by people associated with Arsenal this summer then we are going to look pretty stupid if we continue to nickle-and-dime over transfers and end up with no significant improvement in the team.

It's just so frustrating familiar and annoying that we continue to conduct our business this way.

In 02 we had the backbone of a title winning team and only needed to supplement it but these days we are badly in need of signing core players that be loaded with leadership skills added to the obvious top quality....an 02 summer will not cut it I'm afraid
