Bert Trautmann dies aged 89

Post by officepest »

Bert Trautmann has died aged 89. I'm sure most will be aware of his story -former German paratrooper, then prisoner of war before playing over 500 games for City, including the famous FA Cup final in which he played with a broken neck.

He managed to become a legend, not just for City, but in English football in gerneral, despite the understandable distrust due to his past.

I don't want this to go all Norman Wisdom  but RIP Bert.

As the City players left the pitch one of them, can't remember who, gave Trautmann a congratulatory slap on the back - an inch or so higher and it would've killed him on the spot.
