I'd say Jeremy Beadle is conclusive proof that yes, yes it does.g88ner wrote:Number 5 wrote:We know what we need. We've needed it for about 5 years. But we're sitting on our hands till they go numb and we can jerk ourselves off whilst it feels like a stranger is doing it.

If we do make 4 signings I am happy to bet that not one of them will cost more than £20m and that they will not include either Higuain, Suarez, Rooney or FellainihighburyJD wrote:Still confident that we will make at least 4 signings,

I think we will spend £20m+ on a single player.SteveO 35 wrote:If we do make 4 signings I am happy to bet that not one of them will cost more than £20m and that they will not include either Higuain, Suarez, Rooney or FellainihighburyJD wrote:Still confident that we will make at least 4 signings,

I don't know why that's so hard to believe either. We've nearly hit that number in the past with Cazorla, Reyes and Arshavin, and we're certainly in better shape now, so spending a little more on a player doesn't seem that far fetched.
Not so confident we'll pass £30m though

Re: SUMMER TRANSFERS - Deals, Rumours and Buy/Sell Wish List
I think once Suarez goes to Madrid, Higuain to Napoli, Rooney to Chelsea and Fellaini to Man Utd, he'll come under serious pressure to bring in more numbers and he'll do another mad trolley cash where the biggest signings are around €12-€15m and no doubt the majority from Franceg88ner wrote:I think we will spend £20m+ on a single player.SteveO 35 wrote:If we do make 4 signings I am happy to bet that not one of them will cost more than £20m and that they will not include either Higuain, Suarez, Rooney or FellainihighburyJD wrote:Still confident that we will make at least 4 signings,

I actually think Wenger is an even bigger problem than the board now. Only the other day he was rambling on again about how people these days are only interested in the players you buy rather than the quality of the guy you develop. Errr....not really its just that every single striker we've developed in the last 10 years has been absolute ***** and that's why the fans crave a big name striker. We've seen him have 16 years to develop a striker and he hasn't done it once. They've all been touted as wonderboys (Aliadiere, Lupoli, Quincy, Vela) and to be honest I can't see Akpom or Aneke being any better than the ones mentioned there. If we had the next Thierry Henry coming through the youth system I doubt we would be as bothered by the lack of signings as we are.......but we haven't got one and have waited 16 years for his fabled wonderful youth system to produce one.
If he doesn't sign a top international class striker for €25m plus then we can kiss goodbye to finishing anywhere within 15 points of the title winners, simple as........but I still think his precious principles will stop him doing it and we'll be left with Le Chapman, Wally and Pod probably supplemented by a €12m signing from Ligue 1
Re: SUMMER TRANSFERS - Deals, Rumours and Buy/Sell Wish List
Yeah, I agree with that SteveO.
I must admit, the news that Napoli might get Higuain is deeply worrying, as Rooney and Suarez are surely pie in the sky?
But we must bring in a top class striker, surely? - then again, I read a blog the other day that was arguing that the form of Giroud and Akpom in pre-season was enough to suggest it may be worth saving our one.
I wanted to throttle the author for being so stupid

Akpom has slotted a few easy chances, against terrible opposition
Nothing more
How much players cost isn't the issue for me
I'd have been delighted with Villa.
We do need a match ready striker, I'm sure Wenger realises that

Re: SUMMER TRANSFERS - Deals, Rumours and Buy/Sell Wish List
I just think he belongs to a bygone age. Its similar to the bitter end of GG's regime. Whilst I loved Graham to bits the last 2-3 years of watching his teams was mostly desperate. The whole world knew that we needed a top class midfielder and we were linked with many including Keane, but we kept making do with plodders like Jensen, Morrow, Hillier and Selley, and the one half decent one we had in Schwarz fucked off.g88ner wrote:Yeah, I agree with that SteveO.

GG's early success was signing players like Dixon, Winterburn and Bould for fuck all and moulding them into a much better sum of the parts. That was fine in the pre-Premier League days because clubs didn't generally spend big money on overseas talent, not even the Mickeys or the Mancs who were always bigger clubs historically. So in the pre-1992 days his plan worked. When the Sky money came in, GG wouldn't budge in his approach and we became a mid-table cup side playing mostly desperate football.
Wenger's early success came when he had a free run at French talent and before foreign owners came into the game. The method worked - you could buy Anelka for £500k and Petit for £3m - but now everyone has a global scouting network and Chelsea, United and everyone else has top world stars from an early age. In this day and age a top class striker costs more than £20m, but he seems unable to live in that world and finds the 'new money' approach immoral. Fine to have principles but the days of nicking Anelka from under everyone's noses are gone. I think he still believes he'll sign a Joel Campbell for peanuts and turn him into a Ballon d'Or winner. In some ways its an honourable effort but one that I think started to die a death the minute Abramovich bought Chelsea. United embraced the challenge and we stood there bleating to UEFA about how terrible it all was. Wenger would feel a failure if he had to spend £30m on a player - I really do believe that
