For a club of Arsenal’s size they should be winning trophies. Since the club last won the FA Cup in 2005, Real Madrid have won three league titles and the Copa del Rey; Barcelona have won five La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey twice and the Champions League three times.

United have won five Premier League titles and the Champions League; Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga four times and the Champions League; Chelsea have won two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

BUT! Arsenal is the only team who has won the virtuel trophy consistently in a row! None of the clubs above mentioned have ever achieved that  !

If he thinks his biggest strength lies elsewhere - tries one more time to build a team
and doesn't quite make it, the next manager has even more to spend...

Just a quick question.....when did the clock start on trying to build one more team ? Just trying to find out cos I sure as hell wont accept that this failed project is only just starting in the last 2 years - the clock has long since run out on that one last team :x
The original project failed in August 2011 when we shipped eight against Man Utd and he had to panic buy experienced players. A new project began last season when we signed up a load of young British players. It was Wenger buying himself a few extra years.

To justify the 'English Spine' we need class additions
The signings will come, question is will they be good enough?

Honestly can't see it. Quantity may happen but not the quality.

He simply has to add a striker who can make a Van Persie or Suarez impact on the league. I still think he'd settle for a guy for half the money who might be a useful squad player but won't win us games singlehandedly in the way RvP did. When we beat Chelsea 5-3 a couple of seasons ago, RvP won the game. He was clinical in the extreme. The following season Giroud missed an absolute sitter of a chance at 0-0 and within a couple of minutes they went 1-0 up and we gave it a good shot in the second half but didn't have that RvP quality. Just one example, but why we need a £25m+ man up top.....to turn the midfield dominant spells that we have into the end product required.

I know I go on about Giroud but he isn't the only one and in fairness is better than Chamakh was and Gervinho..........its just he isn't going to get a hattrick at Stamford Bridge. There are few players in world football with that quality and its over to board and Lord Wenger to decide if they can bring themselves to part with what might be up to £40m to get one of them

pretty much all of the World's best strikers have been bought for less
OTOH Sheva/Torres - Chelski, Greedybarndoor - Citeh, Carroll - Liverpool were all £25+

we need investment, we need new players, they need to make an instant impact.
True value/quality will be determined on the pitch, not in negotiations.

Just wait till he brings his memoirs out......'I did them up the Arsenal'

It will be full of how he almost did this and almost signed him, how his hands were tied, and how great he was at collecting virtual trophies, all for a paltry 7m a year. Tw@t.

You have to weigh up factors when you're making signings - and accept that if you're looking to cut back on the fee the chances of an instant impact (for example) are going to be greatly reduced.

Given that our priority was glaringly obvious when the season finished in May (a fucking striker) there were a number of quality options out there who were/are available for a reasonable price.

In fact, it's Wenger's brainwave of waiting until the last week or two that is more likely to see us held to ransom with transfer fees like the above clubs.
