Buy back Cesc Fabregas, or let Man Utd buy him?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Looks like Cesc is staying at Barca:

Quoted by the Spanish newspaper, Sport, Zubizarreta said: "Manchester United are interested in the player but it's also true that they understand our position of not wanting to sell. They have renounced his signing. We aren't going to sell him."

Good news.

United fans had been getting pretty restless but after two leaked transfer bids, a huge PR stunt with telling SkySports etc that their chief exec was leaving tour to conduct transfer business and a fortnight of regurgitated Fabregas stories, there hasn't been much moaning about their lack of transfer activity recently. If they can spin it out a bit longer the start of the season will pretty much be on them by the time they actually admit defeat. Every time Moyes is asked about it and he gives a vague "we're working on it" quote instead of admitting things aren't going anywhere it'll give the story a day or two more life and the BBC will put "United maintain Fabregas hope" as one of their top stories in an article filled with speculation but no substance.

Don't doubt they would love to sign him but I think United know deep down it was never likely to happen - Barcelona were likely not to come out and publicly dismiss the bid out of hand because it's not really their policy - they don't really need to play hardball as they don't have any problem whatsoever keeping hold of players that they really want to. Just enough rope for the media to hang themselves with.

And sure enough this morning's BBC top sports story (after their live cricket): "Man United still keen on Fabregas deal".

It's just flogging a dead horse - with no Olympics and no major football tournament this summer's football journalism has been despicable.
