Website Assistance

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

Website Assistance

Post by augie »

Another technological request I know ( ) but am wondering if there are any guys on here that have any knowledge of putting a website together. My local club are starting off a website and have signed up with a guy that does websites for football clubs and it is free for the first year and only €20 per year after that 8) Tbh the websites that they do are look really good with plenty of colour and detail - amongst the web pages they have set up in their templates is a page that lists all the players you have in your squad and how many goals, red and yellow cards they get over the season and they have a page for the league table that updates itself each time you put in the results and even has two separate tables below the main league table where it breaks down your results based on home games and away games. Anyway it is with these particular pages that I have the problems - I have entered the various data (players names, divisional opponents etc) for our adult team but we need to have the same facility for our kids teams. We are able to add pages to the website but what we want is the same templates on the new pages as those we have already used for the adult team but the guy running the website said that it isn't possible and I don't understand why not (although I am a website rookie) :? Can the templates be copied and added to new pages ? Our new season is starting in two weeks time and I think that I have most of the groundwork done but this part is really holding me up.
If there is anybody out there who can advise me or help me out I would appreciate it if you could either post a reply here or pm me.

Can I also ask the mods if they could please leave this here for a few days to see if I can get any help and after that they can delete it if they wish

Thanks

Long story short, you will be able to do it if you can access the HTML coding. However as he is charging you for hosting he may have also had the foresight to keep the copyright for the site he has designed.

Find out whether you as the club have the copyright as part of them designing it for you, and if you do you can input the HTML code onto each individual page on the new site to recreate the exact same website, you can then update it with the new details.

There is always one *word censored* isn't there

Thanks for the response skizz (beginning to think that no-one on here has a clue :o ) - will find out that copyright part but am doubtful that he will play ball. It's funny really cos he said that he will help me set up the site when needed and he has done so to be fair, but when I asked him to replicate those pages he made out that he didn't understand what I was looking for and then told me that it wasn't possible to do it which is totally baffling to me - surely if I can add pages then it wouldn't be a big deal to put the structures he has, onto those new pages ? :? I would understand if he was trying to get us to buy another website from him but he suggested that we have a different website for the kids teams but that he would include it in the same licence as the adult site therefore no extra money - problem with that plan is that it would still be two different sites and would appear like we are a divided club which we don't want

Does seem odd Augie.

Well, if it's not about the money, then perhaps he's piggybacking on someone else's design codes? (no, I don't know what I'm taking about either  ) - but perhaps, if he's unable to do what appears to be a straight forward programming problem, it suggests he's not the expert, and is in fact using a website template himself? and that's why he's unable to expand it and only able to link into another identical website instead?

I know fuck all, but I'm enjoying this... I'm like Columbo! :rubchin:

Anyway, good luck sorting it out, mate.

I take it at the moment your website is like this:

Homepage
Senior team
> Fixtures
> Results
> Top scorers (whatever)

So you want it to look like this, with the same homepage but the teams accessible from the one website e.g.

Homepage
Senior team
> Fixtures
> Results
> Top scorers (whatever)
U16
> Fixtures
> Results
> Top scorers (whatever)
U13
> Fixtures
> Results
> Top scorers (whatever)

If that is the case, you would simply need to add the additional pages and copy that coding. it's really not difficult, essentially it's cut and paste! Really not sure why he isn't playing ball

The alternative is that you have the separate website for the kids, then do the links to their page from the main site as hyperlinks - that is, you can see them on the original page, but when you click them they take you to another site. By doing it that way the geezer is making it neeeeeeeeedlessly complicated.
