Re: Villa match thread
Spain are playing in Ecuador? What a fucking joke. Completely pointless to have international friendlies four days after the start of the French and German leagues and three days before the start of the English league, especially given that there's a highly inconveniently-placed international break after 3 or 4 every games to ensure that the start of every season is incredibly disjointed.
Until they limit the number of international games played by introducing pre-qualifying tournaments then international football will continue to be viewed as nothing more than a pain in the arse by football clubs. Particularly when you have the likes of Spain playing on the other side of the world in midweek, and no compensation available if your players get bad injuries.
Really, what is the point in San Marino playing Holland, or Luxembourg playing Spain, or Liechtenstein playing Germany? Unfortunately UEFA are going the other way by extending the Euros to 24 teams meaning that half of the football teams in the federation are going to qualify and 75% of the teams at the "major tournament" will be making up the numbers.

Yes, but there's so much more money to line the pockets of UEFA if they do this......................

Exactly - as long as they can still pilfer half of the tickets for the CL final and exploit the fans they don't care. Although to be fair all they're doing is bringing their premier international competition in line with their premier continental competition by making it even more bloated and packed full of no-hopers.
