Pity no one gave the *word censored* a hiding. It only takes one idjit to act like that wearing Red&White to cause a fracas and then that snowballs and suddenly some innocent Gooners take a striping from some right wing away fans (NOT that Marseille have any of that kind. but in other places could easily escalate)

Some people have formed an opinion of Mertesacker, it won't change no matter what they see. He's been our best defender by a country mile since about 6 months after he joined the club. He could sit in our box clearing 100 crosses in a row by being in the right place but he might get his timing wrong and be outjumped on the 101th time and so obviously he's shit in the air. The timing of his tackling is absolutely superb and must be up there with the best in the world, every time he pulls one off (I remember one in the marseille game when I was sure the bloke had got beyond him) the only recognition he gets from commentators is "Oh, he's used his long legs there".

By far one of the most underrated defenders in the league. In fact, I'm not sure there's another CB in the premier league that I'd swap him for

And who said he wasn't our best CH? No one that I can recall... And what a stupid sweeping statement that he's being judged because of 1 time out of 101 times he got it wrong... Fucks sake, who said that? The point is he doesn't clear 100 crosses in a row does he? Again, like the bald culchie, you are confusing tackling with being brave. I'm not talking about his skill as a CH, I'm talking about his ducking away from shots and not launching full in at set pieces.

Obviously that's not a direct quote but it's how I think alot of people have formed negative views of mertesacker. Same for the pace thing, he has suffered a lack of pace in only a handful of situations since he came but some people still tell me he's too slow.

I just think it's churlish to criticise one of our most important players who has been consistently performing pretty much since he joined the club. Maybe he does turn his back on shots at the last moment but he's not the only player I've ever seen do that.

Ah right! So one time in dozens of games he got shoved and bent over and a high foot came up near his head and that makes him brave!! Let's forget all the times he conciously made the decision not to go in where it hurts and all the times he let people outjump him and all the times he's turned his back on and ducked away from shots!! Two things

1) I think you will find Marseille have a fair view who follow them who can be naughty when they want. A few English clubs can vouch for that.

Possibly. Because I do agree he is the best CH at the club. I suppose I'm just a grouchy old fucker that doesn't like a lot of elements of the modern game! I want my CH's scarred up and suicidal!
