bearing in mind we also have OX who is isn't performing and the jury is still out on walcott then we have a underperfoming midfield heavy squad.

arteta and rosicky are out due to age, and Jack is out due to attitude - he hasn't learned from his mistakes, he's still out at 3am drinking in nightclubs, and he still doesn't score enough goals (or hardly any).

after 9 years without a title, no more passengers, no more pandering - we didn't carry anyone in 1998, 2002 or 2004.

I see no reason why we can't rotate the center and play Caz and Ozil together in a 4-3-2-1 with Giroud the spear and Ramsey & Flamini behind them, plus one other.
right now that plus one is not wilshire, ox or wally - someone who can score goals and track back, and of course we have little or no coverage at CB, and our LB and RB can't cross - so given we are weak in at least three positions, selling Caz isn't the answer unless the sale brings in a truly world class up and down midfielder ronaldo, ribery, robben or perhaps a swap for Cesc.

My own thoughts too - play Ozil and Carzola behind Giroud, with a 3 man midfield behind them.

Means that Giroud wouldn't be so isolated (as with 2 wide front men)

Whatever, very excited to see them link up. :barscarf:

Despite a couple of recent good buys, the squad is still poor IMHO and I don't trust wenger to fix that.

We need another clear out - but to have 3/4/5 targets available and willing to sign. Ozil was a great signing and does make us a better 11 but does little for the squad.

This does not make sense tbh.....
Have to agree.

If you sign a first team regular without selling first, then it naturally pushes a regular onto the bench.... thus as if by magic making the squad better than it was! ta da! :D

My note was my attempt to calm hostilities in case they got out of control. Considering some of the vitriol between posters that has happened here in the past (not particularly from yourself) I wanted to prevent things from getting personal.

In time, we could definitely play Santi and Ozil in the same midfield in a 4-3-3 formation but we need two solid wing backs and a proper DM.

I'd be happy to see a team with Cazorla and Ozil in behind a striker with three midfielders - like the old Christmas tree formation. One of the three mids would be a solid DM enforcer who acts as either a RM or LM depending on where the attack is coming from and doesn't go forward at all. I think that would work.

Soz, I meant JUST the signing of Ozil doesn't make the squad stronger cos we're weak all over - had it been Ozil plus Baines plus Higuan plus other quality, then the squad as a whole lot stronger.

Worthing - 433 with those two would be very unbalanced - it has to be a 4-5-1 or 4-3-2-1 or a 4-4-1-1 like Barcelona .

Supposedly (and it remains paper gossip until/if anything is or is not confirmed) Atletico Madrid may bid for Cazorla and Monreal.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... -list.html

When this thread first ran near the start of last season I was firmly in favour of keeping Cazorla, because I want strength in depth.
I still do.

But with the purchase of Sanchez, I reckon I would be tempted by a financially respectable bid from Atletico.

I still rate Cazorla as a passer, but he did tend to drift out of games at times last season, and lacks a bit of pace.

In his two positions of Number 10 and wide left -

We will have Ozil, Rosicky, Wilshere, Podolski, Zelalem who can all play at Number 10.

Plus Ozil, Sanchez, Rosicky, Podolski, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gnabry and Campbell who could all play wide left.

As for Monreal, I think he has been average at best (for us, his form for Spain was better from what little I saw of him play for them).

If we take the cash, we can try for a really top level defensive midfielder, a better second choice left back, plus go for a good centre back too.

Anyone else share my view?

Why not sell Cazorla and buy Fabregas

Cazorla was a liability for much of last season, Monreal wasnt much above average too- think both can go as far as Im concerned as long as we get in a DM please, as well as a LB in exchange for Monreal as Gibbs isnt reliable enough fitness wise.

Cazorla was superb in 2012/13, but he was something of a bit-part player last year and this is only going to increase with Sanchez offering an option out wide. Tbh I've always thought Cazorla was doing a job out there rather than being suited to it, and strikes me as the kind of player whose form will suffer more than most by drifting in and out of the team.

If we sell Cazorla it will stick in the craw that bit more that we passed up on Fabregas for me. Despite what I've said I would far rather see Cazorla in this squad than nobody, and if he goes it will be belatedly recouping money on the Sanhez outlay. It would also send out a bit of a message - regardless of what people have read into some Wenger quotes - about where Sanchez will feature.

To me if you're looking for direct replacements Sanchez comes in for Podolski - love the bloke but he's never going to prosper under Wenger, ever - and then Fabregas replaces Cazorla if desired.

As for Monreal I would happily see him walk out for nothing and I'm sure we could do a whip-round for his plane fare to Madrid. Useless, liability and an absolute coward on the football pitch. His only redeeming feature being that he isn't Fat Andrew.
