Now this is the point the night went a bit wrong for me. Thomas scored, I leapt in the air and my glasses launched themselves high into the night sky never to be seen again. Without my glasses (I now wear contacts) I can barely see my hand at the end my arm.
So after watching some blurry objects cavort around the pitch with the league trophy, or so I'm told, I made my way back to coach 5. The trip back was long but happy. I'm told the players coach passed us at one point, but I couldn't see.
After getting off the coach I made my way to Manor House to get the bus home. At this point I realised I had a problem. Yes I could see the busses but I really couldn't see the numbers on the front. So a call to Dad at 3:00 in the morning. Fortunately I have a great dad who is a gooner to boot. Once he finished laughing at my predicament he was more than happy to come and get me. And thus ended my greatest day as a Gooner.

I nearly pissed myself when I read that bit!!
As a former speccy myself (laser treatment in 2007) I can sympathise cos my specs flew off many times on the old North Bank or several away terraces. Luckily I always got them back though, so never had to make a 200 mile return journey without them. I do remember looking like a prize twat at Ipswich one year when my specs broke across the nose . . . . .
Classic mate - you should write that story in The Gooner magazine next year to commemorate the 25th anniversary.

Re: Anfield '89 stories?
I didn't have a ticket for the game but my mate and I thought we'd have a drive up there for the atmosphere. We arrived in Anfield around 4pm and went for a pint. It was then that we got approached by a tout that offerred us two tickets for the princely sum of £32. Needless to say we bit his hand off, gave him the cash and celebrated having secured a ticket for Arsenal's biggest game in years...................It was only when we got to the ground and tried to find the correct turnstile that we discovered we had tickets to the kop end!
What's the worst that could happen? We went in and made our way as near to the front as we could.Jackets fastened to the neck so nobody could see our colours. We located a copper and pointed out our problem. He was excellent. He told us to step over the front and follow him. He then walked us from the kop to the away enclosure. He told us to keep on the ash path around the edge of the pitch but we had a little stroll on the turf just for good measure. That wouldn't happen these days. We'd get thrown out and a banning order for buying from a tout.
I woke up the next day in a field about 1 mile from my parents house in essex. I'd been asleep on a rock all night and my back was killing me. My mate Sean woke up about 100 yards away from me in the same field.
Here's the scary bit!........I have no recollection of the drive home from Liverpool having had plenty to drink. When we walked home from the field my car was parked perfectly outside my parents house!
It's the only time I've ever driven after having had a drink and the thought that I covered 250 miles whilst totally pissed, not just a little tipsy, without having an accident beggars belief! I've also no idea how I ended up in that field.
Happy days!

Quality.

As for me, I had been promised tickets by a mate in London but got let down at the last minute. Still haven't really forgiven him tbh.

All the pubs in Dublin seemed full of Mouser fans so a Gooner mate and I went to a local hotel where the bar was mostly empty. But about 15 minutes before kick off about 30 Mouser fans walked in and sat further down the bar from us. They were actual Liverpudlians in Dublin for a stag weekend that one of them had booked months earlier before the match had been rescheduled. Turned out to be an ok bunch of lads too. When we won and my mate and I lost our shit big time yelling and screaming and celebrating they didn’t kill us, which was nice.

It's always a good story now, think my dad fell out of bed laughing when I phoned him at 3:00 in the morning. I didn't think it would be a problem when it happened and the coach journey back was OK. It was only when I was stood at Manor House bus stop that I realised I may have a bit of a problem. My freindly optician also had a chuckle when I rocked up up Saturday morning!Jumpers For Goalposts wrote:Wazza97 wrote:Been lurking for ages but 26 May 89 is etched into my memory so had to post. Re: Anfield '89 stories?
Just the best day/night ive ever had following the Arsenal and i was lucky enough to be there right behind that goal. Even if we were to win the CL now, i don't think it would beat that night in Liverpool.
Four of us set off from Enfield about 1.30 that afternoon thinking we had plenty of time and would get there early. 6 and a half hours later we arrived at Anfield, only missing the first 15 mins.
However, if it wasn't for some bloke in a van on the M6 we would have missed the whole night.
Like most others we were stuck in gridlocked traffic somewhere near Stafford. Thinking we were not going to make it we were thinking about turning off and going to the nearest pub to watch it. At this time a bloke in a van next to us asked us if we were going to the game and then gave us directions to Liverpool through the back roads via The Wirral and the Birkenhead tunnel. Thanks to that man we got there for the greatest night.
I find it hard to put in to words how great that game and the moment when MT scored was. Although ive had many happy times at football the feeling we got then has never reached those heights.
True pandemonium. The whole country watching, Liverpool being the best team in Europe for the previous 15 years, us needing to win by 2 goals, injury time winner, us haven't not won the league in 18 years...................never to be repeated and certainly the greatest finish ever to a league season. Man City v QPR doesn't come close!!

Fucking SlySports tried the whole "greatest end to a league ever" rubbish with that Citeh win but it doesn't even come close because of the criteria you mention.

Did Citeh need to beat the only other team that could win it in a direct head to head? Did Citeh need to go to Old Shatford and beat a massively dominant Manure by at least two clear goals? Did they fuck.

Re: Anfield '89 stories?
You know according to Sky, football started in August 1992. Absolute joke to compare Citeh's win with Anfield 89. Already looking forward to the 25yr celebrations. Wonder what Sky will do for it?

Re: Anfield '89 stories?
Absofuckinglutely. I wasn't even about to witness Anfield 89 but anybody with any interest in football knows that 2012 doesn't come close. Ultimately it was a piss-poor league that year and although dramatic the way in which QPR gave up and happily folded against Citeh was a fitting way to end a season in which two fairly average teams both amassed a whopping 89 points. Anfield 89 is just unbeatable - it was literally the perfect set-up and most drama and entertainment conceivable. I'm sure modern-day TV would rather have a twist and turn 4-3 winner-takes-all tie but it's simply unrivalled and always will be.DB10GOONER wrote:Amen.SPARKSY wrote:Just the best day/night ive ever had following the Arsenal and i was lucky enough to be there right behind that goal.
