So how long did he have on his existing contract then that this was of such urgency, when we have Sagna soon to be out of contract, leaving us with Jenkinson....oh well Arsene knows.
Re: Szczesny signs up ***** drama over *****
I know people love knocking Wenger, but in fairness, the club may want Sagna to sign a new contract and it might actually be Sagna who is stalling? - I reckon PSG or Monaco might come calling, and if so he may take it.StuartL wrote:So how long did he have on his existing contract then that this was of such urgency, when we have Sagna soon to be out of contract, leaving us with Jenkinson....oh well Arsene knows.

I bet they do want him to sign a new deal, but this should have been sorted last year. Instead we dick around with a one-year contract offer (can't remember if reports included pay cut too?) and surprise surprise we again find ourselves in the position where we're panicking because we've let a player run his deal right down.g88ner wrote:I know people love knocking Wenger, but in fairness, the club may want Sagna to sign a new contract and it might actually be Sagna who is stalling? - I reckon PSG or Monaco might come calling, and if so he may take it.StuartL wrote:So how long did he have on his existing contract then that this was of such urgency, when we have Sagna soon to be out of contract, leaving us with Jenkinson....oh well Arsene knows.

to be fair, i had no idea that Ches was just 23 - did you ? - most keepers don't play their best stuff until their late 20's so in that respect i think he's done pretty well so far.
he could end up being truly world class, but whether he should be currently our #1 is another matter.
personally, i find him less frustrating than Manninger or Almunia.

TBF I haven't been overly impressed with sagna this season. Good to see sir chez get a new deal. He's done well just need improve distribution.
Re: Szczesny signs up ***** drama over *****
I don't know if those rumours are true though, so I tend to ignore them.northbank123 wrote:I bet they do want him to sign a new deal, but this should have been sorted last year. So putting aside what may or may not have happened, it strikes me as likely that Monaco and PSG may make a move for Sagna. He's on a free and may be looking for a big contract that those French clubs (especially tax free Monaco) can offer.
Hopefully we can get him to stay though.

I'm hardly one to rely much on media speculation but I recall it being fairly widely reported and moreover it sounds like exactly the kind of thing we'd do and explains the situation far better than anything else.g88ner wrote:I don't know if those rumours are true though, so I tend to ignore them.northbank123 wrote:I bet they do want him to sign a new deal, but this should have been sorted last year. But even disregarding that if Sagna was refusing to sign because he had his heart set on a move to one of those clubs to my mind he would have left during the summer. Any club in France would snap him up, a few calls from his agent and we would sell with no fuss if he wanted to leave. Can't see him happily twiddling his thumbs for another year if that was what he had his heart set on.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong... but I was under the impression that during last season the club were holding back from offering a new contract, because they wanted to see how Sagna's injury woes panned out.northbank123 wrote:I'm hardly one to rely much on media speculation but I recall it being fairly widely reported and moreover it sounds like exactly the kind of thing we'd do and explains the situation far better than anything else.g88ner wrote:I don't know if those rumours are true though, so I tend to ignore them.northbank123 wrote:I bet they do want him to sign a new deal, but this should have been sorted last year. I remember it being reported that Sagna was a bit miffed that the club were refusing to negotiate a new contract at that time.
So if he decides to fuck off, the club only have themselves to blame!

Edit... Wenger only has himself to blame, but will never fucking admit it.

If only this calibre of 'keeper were available (should've gone for Lloris, but hey ho) then I'd agree. I reckon Szcz is improving and is a far better option than Flappy and is also a considerable upgrade on Coco the Clown so I'm pretty happy he's been tied down.Top Londoner wrote:Meh !!!!

I only hope he doesn't now think "right, I've made it, cheers for the bumper new contract, now I'm gonna do nothing" because he could be good. Time will tell I suppose.
Sagna should have been sorted yonks ago as Jenks isn't good enough to replace him.
Re: Szczesny signs up ***** drama over *****
Didnt Wenger give Almunia a long term contract?
I still think we need to sign an experienced back up keeper.Szczesny still has a lot to learn. And having Flappy as number 2 is like relying on Bendtner upfront

Wenger has made his choice that Szczesny is his number 1 and he'll stand by that - if he keeps up the form and cuts out the dicking around completely then it may well pay serious dividends in years to come. I personally am still pissed off we didn't sign Lloris because the chance to sign keepers of that experience and quality, of that age and at that price come along once in a blue moon and it would have nailed down that position for nearly a decade but I really hope Szczesny proves him right.
But even having decided on Szczesny there is absolutely no justification for not having any other half-decent keepers around who he could rely on. Pantilimon, Lindegaard, Friedel, Schwarzer - not just back-ups but keepers that can actually provide a viable option if #1 is out of form. Szczesny had to play dreadfully for over a year and display a continued woeful attitude on the pitch before Wenger could justify to himself taking the huge gamble of playing Flappy instead for a handful of games.

Were we supposed to be having a drama about this? I must have missed that memo.
It's really difficult to keep up with all the Arsenal issues to be outraged / disgusted / dramatic about ; someone should come up with some kind of message board so all of these can be logged in one place.

Played very very well this season apart from Villa (and that one 2 with Sturridge) so I for one am very happy with the new contract. Just hope he carries on the form now he has a contract and doesn't do a Theo i.e once you get the contract you start playing poorly.
Re: Szczesny signs up ***** drama over *****
Just bumped this one, since we are on the subject of our improved form this season, Mert and Kos getting a lot of the credit (and rightly so) but I honestly think Scez has been our player of the season thus far and for me the best goalkeeper in the prem league.
Contrary to my usual pessimism, Scez was a player I've always had faith in
, and has probably won us 10 points this season with outstanding saves.
Hope I haven't put the blah on him for Saturday
