Groundhog summer transfer window thread
Re: January transfer rumours thread
So the January excuses have been laid down
What was the excuse for spending 3 months fucking about in the Summer and only adding Sanogo to the list of strikers?
In the Summer it was "difficult to persuade clubs to sell" and in January its err......"difficult to persuade clubs to sell"
When Wenger almightily fucked up in the Summer, but came "very close", his apologists talked about the January window. Now the January window approaches, its too difficult. No doubt this Summer it will be because the World Cup disrupts everything and makes prices even more 'dizzying'.
It comes down to desire. The Russian season wasn't finished when we signed Arshavin and the Spanish season wasn't finished when we signed Reyes. Both of those players were key to their clubs and we signed them both in January. So fuck what Atletico want - if the boy has a clause and is good enough then go for him

Re: January transfer rumours thread
I think people often neglect to look at it from the players point of view and forget that they're human beings. Would Costa really be up for moving abroad at a moments notice, especially as you say in a world cup year? IF we met the release clause and forced it there is no guarantee he will settle and hit the ground running, in fact I would bet against it. My preference would be someone like Benteke on a short-ish term contract (2 years, something like that). A player who is used to the premier league and would be coming in with a point to prove. My only concern would be his injuries but he seems to be back playing now.kiwomya wrote:You'd expect him to uproot mid-season in a World Cup year and go to another country? Different story in the summer but you're seriously expecting this to happen half way through a season?MrT wrote:Do you understand how a release clause works? Said club would have no choice if it was met.kiwomya wrote:This exactly. Which clubs are going to disrupt themselves mid season and sell us one of their top players? it's fucking suicide for them.rigsby wrote: Costa etc are not going to come. Athletico are top of the league and in Europe, why would he WANT to go? Name a top striker in Europe at the moment that we could ACTUALLY sign. Coupled with the fact Chelsea and most other clubs in World football are also looking for a top class centre forward. Also, if you want these top clas splayers you will have to wait probably right to the end of the transfer window ala Ozil, to get them. But patience and some people on this forum do not go hand in hand.
I honestly think people on here whip things up just so they have something "new" to moan about.
Costa is attainable if it was met, we are top of the league in the best league in the world, entirely possible to get him.
Re: January transfer rumours thread
I don't think there's even a 1% chance we'd sign someone like that in January or any one for big money. Apart from the Torres out Carroll/Suarez in at Liverpool I've never known there to be big signings in any position in January.MrT wrote:Money talks and while a transfer midway through a season is tricky I believe it's possible IF Wenger and Co. seriously wanted him.kiwomya wrote:You'd expect him to uproot mid-season in a World Cup year and go to another country? Besides, Atletico are in serious debt, they might want this to happen sooner rather than later.
IMO, Arsenal will get someone for a small fee or on loan and sort something else in the summer.
Re: January transfer rumours thread
Before we signed Ozil our two highest transfers were made in January
However, I agree with Kiwomya for different reasons that we won't sign anyone in January. When we signed Arshavin we had been beaten 5 times before Christmas including a pathetic 3-0 at City and the virtual trophy was under threat. He sparked a turnaround in form and coupled with Villa's collapse we pulled it back round
This time round out £25m windfall from Be All and End All football is virtually assured so there'll be no new signings of note

I'm guessing you're digging at me then. I don't know who's spouting excuses as I can only see people offering reason to the immature expectations people have nowadays for transfers.SteveO 35 wrote:So the January excuses have been laid down

I for one thought it was poor by the club to not sort the striker situation out in the summer. Although Ozil was a ridiculously good addition we still needed at least one more body up front. No doubt about it.
Sanogo was a gamble that hasn't paid off in the slightest. I don't know anyone that can defend that.

Reyes? Roughly £9M rising to possible £17M.
Arshavin? Roughly £14M.
Re: January transfer rumours thread
We'd tracked Reyes for 2 years or so.....I don't believe he has anyone like that on his radar now. Certainly not Costa or Benteke.QuartzGooner wrote:How aboutkiwomya wrote: Apart from the Torres out Carroll/Suarez in at Liverpool I've never known there to be big signings in any position in January.

Arshavin was a desperate signing that had the desired effect, as I pointed out above, of rescuing Be All and End All football when it was slipping away. Thank Christ for that otherwise I'd have had to find a deep lake, a sack, some bricks and a rope if we had to make do without that for a year. Think of all those world class players we've held on to throughout the years simply by being there
Re: January transfer rumours thread
I stand corrected on Arshavin. I didn't see Reyes as a big signing though.QuartzGooner wrote:How aboutkiwomya wrote: Apart from the Torres out Carroll/Suarez in at Liverpool I've never known there to be big signings in any position in January.

Re: January transfer rumours thread
dont want any striker from the bundesliga apart from the obvious whos going to bayern, some right donkeys score quite a few over there
Re: January transfer rumours thread
Wasn't really specifically getting at you......I just don't buy into this "its all too difficult" stuff. In any line of business attracting the best isn't easy....so it comes down to ambition and having the sheer bloody tenacity to pull it off......and I simply think Wenger/Gazidis/Kroenke do not want it enough to achieve itkiwomya wrote:I'm guessing you're digging at me then. Re: January transfer rumours thread
Can you blame him? He was up against Mertesacker and Koscielny. Most strikers would look useless.SteveO 35 wrote:Our prayers have been answered (well some posters on here's prayers anyway)
And the Gunners could also sign France striker Loic Remy, 27, after Queens Park Rangers player said that he does not know if he will return to Loftus Road after his loan at Newcastle ends.
Full story: Times
I guarantee those advocating signing this bloke will be back a year later moaning about how he's just another average Ligue 1 player on a par with Forehead. He was fucking useless against us BTW
Re: January transfer rumours thread
Why on earth would Wenger even consider spending big on a world class striker?
Top four is almost secured. Spending big while we are top would put Wenger under pressure to actually win the league when his target is a nice top four finish.
A loan deal or cheaper option or internal solution is what we'll see as yet another season drifts by trophyless.
Then we'll have the world cup and the inherant difficulties.
But why are we here? Having this discussion. Yet again?
Well its because Wenger hasnt done his job. Again. Fucking about with insulting bids for Suarez. Dithering over Higuain. Last minute ebbarrassing cap in hand knock-back for Ba.
What an incompetent he is.
I do reckon its possible to get the likes of Costa but you need to have someone to actually try to sign him, not just pay lip service and create the illusion that we're properly interested.
We need it taken out of Wengers hands (like I believe Ozil was and some say Arseshavin was). Then we might actually do some business

Re: January transfer rumours thread
If I were the agent of any of the top quality strikers previously listed, I would want them to sit tight to after the world cup and see if that competition has saw their valuation rocket, rather than move now.
Any striker that we would like/want will be cup-tied in Europe anyway.
If Remy is on loan for the season to the toon, does that mean QPR's hands are tied regards selling him now. I just think he is the most realistic target if we could get him.

Can you explain that for me kiwomya ? I really don't understand who or what is quantified as immature expections ? Personally I'm not expecting us to sign falcao, messi or the portugese ladyboy and nor am I expecting us to spend 150-200m on making signings either, but what I am expecting is that we use the considerable resources available to us, to buy the highest quality of players in the positions that we most need upgrading - not sure what is immature about that
