Yes, we played shit. But I don't think you can keep beating the team around the head with it. Fact is since that game we've gone 14 ahead of them and done well. We've really lost one BIG game this year in the league which was City. The others we've drawn or won, so I'm not too concerned at the moment. And we were 8 points ahead of them last time we played them and put in a disgracefully limp-dicked performance. We haven't had the same kind of hoodoo at home to them where we've had a bit of a mixed bag of a record over the last decade or so I think we will get a result but until we stop bottling it against the big teams it's a perfectly legitimate gripe to have.

Surely if you want to convince yourself (as a team) that you are good enough to win trophies then you have to do so by winning against the big teams in games like old shatford, Napoli and Dortmund (at home) ? It wasn't just the defeat in mancland that hurts but more the manner of it - it has got to raise doubt in people (and the young players) that we went up there and rolled over for them when teams like Southampton went up and stood toe to toe with them and refused to back down. Was it tactics that caused us to play that way or was it that the players froze on the day ? Either way winning at mancland is a must if you want to be genuine contenders and that is regardless of how they are doing

While I am disappointed that we have yet again failed to beat the big teams in the premier league (except maybe Liverpool), I disagree that you have to beat the big teams to win trophies. I mean we are top of the league after playing everyone at least once now, so surely that shows it is possible to win a trophy should you still lose to the big teams, as long as you grab the three points from the teams you should certainly be winning against.augie wrote: Surely if you want to convince yourself (as a team) that you are good enough to win trophies then you have to do so by winning against the big teams in games like old shatford, Napoli and Dortmund (at home) ? Three points against the big teams are no more valuable in the scheme of things versus three points against a team such as Fulham or Palace.
I am fairly confident that if we grab three points each game leading up to the United game (which we can do) then we will almost certainly beat United at home.

What daft logic. Dear Christ I can't believe you actually type that out.
Anyway, it's very amusing watching the plastic manx fans implode. I often see or hear them saying they don't want us to win the league because the Arsenal fans will be insufferable. Good, they can finally realise what it's been like having to put up with them.

We were at one point 5 points clear at the top and got reeled in to 1 point. This was simply because we bottled it against teams of note by either drawing (Everton and Chavs at home) or losing (pasting at the Etihad).Ryanswannell wrote:While I am disappointed that we have yet again failed to beat the big teams in the premier league (except maybe Liverpool), I disagree that you have to beat the big teams to win trophies. Now that we're only a point clear, do you really think we won't get overtaken, and get thrown in the 4th place race, if we continue to be shit against the traditional big teams and teams like Everton that show some bottle?

I don't know unfortunately, but you seem to say it like we are absolutely certain to lose weeks before we even play these teams. And some people on this forum say that the players are guilty of throwing in the towel before a gameBlood_Gooner wrote:We were at one point 5 points clear at the top and got reeled in to 1 point. The negativity on here is unbelievable sometimes, it really is.

We didn't play shit. Playing shit is excusable. We didn't turn up. The reason some people (myself included) place so much weight on that game isn't merely because we lost, it's because we showed exactly the same inferiority complex that we do up there every year despite the positions being reversed.rigsby wrote:Yes, we played shit. It also bears more significance when you factor in the Citeh and Chelsea games. Just like in previous years we've gone into those games with completely the wrong set-up and the players haven't performed. Against Chelsea Mourinho found it incredibly easy as always to stifle our creativity and had Lampard not missed that sitter in the first-half would undoubtedly have closed out the game in familiar fashion. Against Citeh we were ridiculously open and both times Walcott managed to haul us back into the game we contrived to throw away a goal straight away to ensure it was a no-contest.
Do you think it's unreasonable to question this team's ability to step up to the plate on the biggest occasions? If so I suggest you jog your memory about our record in knockout competitions since 2006 and our record against the big guns domestically since the start of 2008. And for all the improvement this year this team have hardly bucked the trend in the 3 games mentioned above.

Unfortunately we're not allowed to do that.northbank123 wrote:

Apparantely, (because we are now top) we must totally erase from our minds everything that ever happened between May 2005 until May 2013. 8 years. Whoosh. Gone.

We must now (because we are top) "enjoy the moment". Dont question, criticise or offer a negative opinion. And most importantly - selective memory. Remember only Wengers successful years pre 2006 and the 7 months of this season.

I am far from the worst on here for negative comments - I take immense pleasure in seeing us do well and I don't express pessimism for the sake of it. I do understand how it seems to people - particularly those that post less frequently - when they log on and people are complaining about some aspect of our latest win.armchair supporter wrote:Unfortunately we're not allowed to do that.northbank123 wrote:

Reality is we've barely dropped any silly points this year. Despite our performances (or not) in the big games it's only Villa home and West Brom away that were points we really shouldn't be dropping, and anybody denying that there have been improvements over the last 12 months or so is being stubborn to the point of blindness.
But as I've said in my last two posts on this thread the fundamental questions over whether we have the quality in depth and whether we have the bottle in the big games remain and they're the things that have scuppered any chances of winning trophies in the past few years so I don't think I'm being particularly unreasonable here.

My problem is I cant forgive Wenger for treating the club as his own personal vehicle for a massive ego trip. For insulting me and treating me like a stupid *word censored*.northbank123 wrote:

Like everyone else I used to love him. But now that relationship is completely fractured to the point where I cant bear the sound or sight of him.
Theres nothing I like more than having a couple beers, cheering on the team and having a good day out. But when its over and Wenger is still fleecing us, lying to us and treating us like idiots then I come back down to earth with a bump.
I simply cant just forget about all the shit Wenger has done and failed to do on the back of seven good months. For me its broken beyond repair. And its fukin horrible to feel that way about your teams manager.

I'm just glad we have been able to clear that up, now you have had such a revelation you can overhaul the original thought process you used to use and now apply one with much greater logic and evaluation.
