Previous Arsenal v Newcastle matches (Highbury / Emirates)

Post by StuartL »

Must have been to quite a few over the years, with us usually coming out on top.

Most memorable for me was the 15/4/89 when we played them at Highbury, while up at Sheffield the cup semi was taking place at Hillsborough.
As the reports came through the crowd became very subdued, even though we were riding high in the title charge and got a vital 1-0 win.
Kenny Sansom got a great reception and had a "goal" disallowed for offside, which was a tight call.

There was also the game when we lost 3-1 when Bobby Robson was in charge of the Magpies and was quoted along the lines of "some people need to learn how to lose" (not sure who exactly it was aimed at)

Recently the 7-3 win was a bit memorable.

Might want to keep an eye on the back post Gibbsy

Your memories please...

That is the one that sticks in my mind as well...remember the afternoon so well, if not the game itself!

Also the 5-3 when Malcolm "Supermac" MacDonald scored a hat-trick for us against his former club (or at least that's what my memory says...maybe it was 2?)

Obviously 7-3 last year. Remember a victory in 1997 where Keith Gillespie got sent off (2-1 maybe?, obviously not that well) but one of my first games, they had a horrible maroon and light blue away kit.

Yeah it was late 1976 when Supermac got his hat-trick in the 5-3 win.. Think Trevor Ross got one of the others. There was a second signing from The Geordies at that time One Pat Howard..anyone remember him ? Remember Romford Pele getting a hat-trick against them at Highbury , Flamini hitting a screamer at the bowl and Andy Carroll getting the winner for them a few seasons back.

6 in the second half last year. Most we've ever scored in 45 mins?

Yep, remember the Supermac game well. Was a freezing cold day where most of the first division games were postponed apart from ours cos of our undersoil heating and one other game which ended in something like 6-4 so MOTD were creaming themselves over 2 games producing around 18 goals!

I remember Newcastle bringing around 8,000 to Highbury on a Tuesday night for their first season back in Division 1 back in 1984. They were top of the league but we won 2-0. Brian Talbot scored from a free kick and then repeated it against Liverpool in a 3-1 the following Saturday. And unless my memory is letting me down that win put us top of the league and it was the first time we'd been top at any point since we the title in 1971.

That ''you need to learn how to lose'' remark was aimed at Arsenal in general I think although maybe Henry in particular who was questioning Graham Poll at the end of the game (which disgracefully he got a ban for it because Sky News played it on a loop for the next 2 weeks) who felt we'd been cheated. Which we had.

Strangely not so long after that Robson ranting and raving in the TV interview after a game at St James' about how Bergkamp had got Laurent Robert sent off. Dennis having the cheek to have his quickly taken free kick blocked by an already booked Robert stretching his leg out from a yard away.

Some need to learn how to lose eh Bobby? What like your classic example of taking being cheated on the chin in Mexico 86 ?

To be fair mate, I think I would have had to have been dragged away from in turns; Maradona, the ref, Hodge & Reid after the HoG and shite 'defending' for the second, as I would have tried to kill them with my bare hands & teeth.

Remember that so well.. RTE (Irish TV Station) used to show MOTD on a Monday night.. The two day wait for MOTD was unbearable... The other game was Birmingham scoring six, cannot remember the opposition though. If memory serves Kenny Burns was in that Birmingham team that day.

Robert had just been booked for a late tackle, then twice prevented Bergkamp from taking a quick free, then when ref blew the whistle he blasted the ball at Lauren. When Bergkamp was taken off Robson stood on the touchline shaking his head at Bergkamp. Obviously this was picked up by Sky and as Sir Bobby had reached Sainthood at that time Bergkamp was cast as a devil.. It was complete shit from the media. There was no logic in blaming DB10 for Robert's red card but what the fuck it was an opportunity to have a cheap shot at Arsenal.

My favorite for sure - not often us Aussies get to the Emirates so a ten goal feast was outstanding!
