The Summer 2014 TRANSFER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Injured. Still at the club.

I really wanted him to do well but with each passing year it seems less likely.

Even ignoring the fact that an argument you put forward about two posts ago was that he 'knows' Arsenal and the PL (5 goals in 3 PL seasons, calm down Carlos) that is a ridiculous statement. Methinks you are getting extremely carried away again.

Just hope this talk of ex players returning is just rumour. Vela Song etc.

We did feck all when they were with us first time, whats to suggest we'd do any better now, under the same manger?

Lehmann, Sol, Henry. Even Flamini who has don a job is indicitave of a lack of forward thinking and a penny-pinching, small-time mentality which doesnt befit a club of Arsenals stature and is frankly embarrassing.

The only ex-players that Wenger has brought back to the club have been free or loan deals, like the chaps you've mentioned. If memory serves Wenger's never paid cash for a player he's previously sold so I cannot see him bringing Vela back.

That also rules out Mong :barscarf: and Fabregas :(

It would probably jar his ego to have to pay actual cash to bring in someone whom he's previously let go.

Maybe so but he will be under real real pressure to invest in the squad this summer and I honestly believe he no longer trusts his own opinion, or that of his scouts, to identify new players that suit his system (and I'm obviously using the term system loosely cos the c*nt has no proper system  ). I also feel that the recent signings don't buy unconditionally into words and idea's so he needs to redress that with more of his disciples - players like BFG, podolski, ozil and cazorla are experienced top quality players who have a multitude of experience playing in good teams and under good managers so are less likely to feel that debt of gratitude to wenker (like most do) and will be more clinical in their assessment of the team, formation, tactics and of course the manager.
It is for these reasons that I believe that he is happy to continue signing former players regardless of cost, and in the cases of cesc and dingdong, the way the deals were structured with barca should ensure a cheaper price that what they were sold for

Fair points there Augie but I would still be gobsmacked if Cesc or Dong return, unless of it's some sort of convoluted loan deal. Best case scenario is Utd or whoever bid large sums of coin for Song and we have a sell-on clause.

We could then stash that cash in the bank with the rest of our millions. Is there a trophy for Most Financially Prudent Team we can apply for?

Shall we also not refer at Ian Huntley's previous conviction because he claims to be a totally changed man?

:?

Extreme example I know (law student habit, sorry) but of course you have to look at previous because what happens sets precedent. Look at Gervinho, good reputation when he came(all be it older than Vela), didn't make it at Arsenal and now doing rather well for Roma - do I want him back? No.

The English league doesn't suit some players and Vela is one of them players.
Vela was 21 when he left us! You mention Gervinho but let me give you Matic who left Chelsea at a similar age as Vela, proved himself in a worse league than the La Liga and went back to Chelsea a mature player and now he's dominating the midfield for them.

What if Vela goes to Citeh or Chelsea (he has a 25m release clause) and becomes a superstar for them? We're gonna look like mugs.

How many pages before we buy somebody? I am going for 127 before we give a Ligue 1 club £6m for their right-back
